In the darkness, L could make out the silhouette of Light sleeping beside him. L had expected Light to oppose the idea of sleeping in the same bed as him. Light didn't seem thrilled about it, he agreed to it anyway, most likely because he knew L would've accused him of being Kira again and they would've ended up sleeping together anyway.
L was starting to regret this for two reasons. One, he seldom slept for very long, preferring to keep himself awake on caffeine and sugar. Light complained about the glow from L's laptop keeping him awake, so eventually L gave in and put it away. Two, L couldn't stand looking at the man beside him and knowing he was Kira. At this moment, the second thing was bothering L most. He urged himself to turn over and close his eyes, to stop thinking about Light, but he couldn't get himself to do it.
"Light, are you awake?" L whispered. There was no response, so L moved closer to Light, gently draping his arm around him. L pressed his chest against the brunette's back, nuzzling his head into Light's shoulder. He inhaled, breathing in Light's familiar scent. He hated that if he was right, and Light was Kira, Light wanted to kill him. L wanted to get rid of Kira, too, but if Light was Kira...could he?
He felt something warm run down his cheeks.
A tear? I haven't cried in a long time, L thought. He didn't feel as though he had anything to cry about. He couldn't really miss his parents; he was so young when they died, he could hardly remember their faces.
He hadn't felt lonely too often, despite only having Watari for a companion. He had never known any different, so it didn't bother him.
Thinking about both of these things made him feel a little empty inside, but he couldn't recall the last time he had cried over them.
He wiped his eyes on his shirt. There's no use crying already. I'm not 100% sure he's Kira yet…
He ran his long fingers through Light's hair, exhaling. L twirled it around his finger, admiring it's soft texture. L leaned forward and awkwardly left a kiss on Light's cheek.
He hadn't realized how much he'd wanted to do that until after he'd done it. He returned to his previous position, with his head against Light's shoulders. He managed to doze off eventually, still
The following morning, L was surprised to wake up with both of Light's arms around him, and Light's head on his shoulder.
