In Colour

It's a reasonably pathetic realisation that Simon Lloyd's mood is entirely affected by the colour shirt Amanda McKay wears on a given day, but it is none the less accurate.

He loves her best when she wears red – those are his favourite days without question. Any crimson variant against her milky skin instantly makes his day worthwhile. Those are the days he finds himself smiling for no good reason, humming on the train, and breathing freely and easily.

When she wears green, he knows his day will be challenging. She usually feels the need to contradict him, push him, and although he doesn't mind that, some days he finds the thought nothing but tiring.

Pale blue is arguably his favourite colour, but he can't help but think the softness of it doesn't highlight the alabaster glow of her flesh.

Purple is a mystery to him in every way. She's completely inconsistent on purple days, and so he has no choice but to agree with every single thing she says. She's usually bright, her happy self, but she has the ability to turn like a death adder and leave him fearing for his life.

He doesn't know why, but there's something particularly sexy about grey on her. There's a hint of mischief in her eyes which he always finds highly volatile. The tightly fitted grey shirt with the sweeping mother of pearl buttons is a particular favourite, but also, he knows, the most hazardous to his resolve.

White is what she wears when she wants to seem innocent, but is planning evil {professionally}. She usually wears it when she knows she's just a little bit screwed case-wise, and she feels she needs an extra air of holiness.

So today, when she walks in wearing pink – pink, for god's sake, Amanda doesn't wear pink – he has no idea how to feel – what his mood should be, how her mood will be, but he is completely riveted at the prospect of finding out.
