It was a silent night in team RWBY's apartment. Weiss had wandered off to finish something, though she hadn't mentioned what. Blake sat on one of their couches, engrossed in a book, only one of the dozens that currently lined their shelves. Yang had grown bored, and slight hunger had begun to set in as well. Unable to rest because of this combination, she moved into the kitchen and began baking. Ruby's obsession with cookies left Yang with the ingredients to make just that. Soon, almost an hour had gone by as Yang prepared the cookies, and slid the tray holding the piles of dough into the oven. This was the worst part, waiting as the scent of sweets filled the room, only growing stronger as time went by. One short nap later, after being awakened by the ding of the oven, Yang returned to the kitchen and set the cookies out to cool. As she looked down at them on the counter-top, just after she had set them down, a tear dropped onto the hot foil. They reminded Yang of Ruby, the sister she had lost not one month prior. She blamed herself. She was always watching out for her little sister, always protecting her. Losing her in that single instant had torn her apart.

Flashbacks went through her mind of that day. They had been called because of an increase in Grimm activity in the Forest of Forever Fall. The place wasn't new, and neither were Grimm, especially since they had already graduated from Beacon. They accepted and went quickly to get the job done. None of them expected the number of Grimm that there were. Just as none of them had expected to see Ruby, their young leader, attacked by an Ursa Major. They only warning it gave was a roar, and even that was a mere second before it brought a massive paw down onto Ruby, sending her flying across the clearing. Yang turned around in time for the roar, but wasn't fast enough to save Ruby. Ruby screamed for a second, the noise only ceasing because of the snapping of her spine against a thick tree. Yang's rage ended the battle in an instant, but the damage was done. Ruby lay a crumpled heap of red and black, void of life.

The tears were flowing faster now, and her sobs could be heard by Blake. She smelled the cookies and made the connection. She set her book down and went to comfort Yang. Yang had always blamed herself for Ruby's death. Blake on the other hand, tried to ease her pain by assuring her that it wasn't her fault, that no one saw it coming. She kissed Yang's cheek and brought her back to the couch. She did her best to calm Yang as she wept in Blake's arms. She was asleep soon, and Blake chose to lay her on the couch, as she knew Yang was too heavy to be carried to her bed. Unbeknownst to Blake, Weiss had made the same connection between Ruby and the fresh cookies. Weiss refused to let anyone know as she lay crying in her bed, soon asleep as well.

Maybe cookies weren't the best choice.
