Was it only just a couple days ago that she was holding her son in her arms? That he was healthy, squirmy and fidgety as can be, all the while babbling 'Mama' non-stop?
The fever had come quickly, and Jack had done everything in his power. But he wasn't even a year old yet; just one month shy, and way too young to take on such an illness without proper medicines.
She sits in front of the wooden cross, the sand beneath it not yet settled from the burial.
They all try to comfort her; Jack, Kate, Sayid, Michael, Sun. She isn't receptive to any of them.
It's two days later when Sawyer approaches.
"Hey, Mamacita," he starts, then flinches when he realizes what the nickname implies. "Sorry…. I ain't the best at comforting people."
The silence is heavy, and she gives him a weary glance.
He kneels down in the sand beside her and asks "Is there anything ya want me to do for ya, Claire?"
Is there anything she wants? All she wants is her son back. But even he couldn't do that for her.
She shakes her head, and he stands back up, shifting his feet for a few awkward moments.
"Okay, then. Let me know if ya think of anything."
And then he walks away, just like all the others did. She hopes they'll all just leave her and her son alone now.
She's surprised when he sits down beside her the next day, but she doesn't acknowledge him. Only a minute passes before he starts talking to her. After a moment of confusion, she glances over and realizes he's not talking at all.
He's reading to her.
He's reading to her son.
