The sunset was a sparkling yellow that faded into shocking vermillion that ultimately became slate blue and hung over the world. She could still see the path of the green light that had passed through; it lingered in the air for a while before she looked away, because in this respect she already knew the future.
Her daughter slowly came running over to her, eyes sparkling and looking confused. Her daughter didn't know, but her mother knew, and she knew it was right – that had her wish been granted, right there, right then, it would have been the wrong choice. Even so, she wanted to burst into tears and simply fall, crying her heart out, because she knew what had yet to come.
"Mama, do you think that Papa will come back?" Her daughter's voice was innocent, and worried, and as the field of green around them dissolved and folded into itself, her mother wrapped her arms around her tightly.
"Yes," she lied.
The golden sunset was being sucked into darkness, and she could see the star slowly inverting to become a black hole itself. Her universe – their universe – was dying, because it had to die, but it didn't make it any less painful. The great unknown lay before her, and she had to pass it to get where she needed to go – where both of them needed to go.
"Mama, I don't like this," said the girl, and her voice was trembling. The warmth that had surrounded them had been consumed by this time, and they were left with the infinite feeling of cold and nothing.
"I know," she answered, careful not to let the tears that were in her eyes seep into her voice. Both of them shivered, and she tried to warm herself with memories – memories that shouted FALSE at her every time.
"Mama, are you scared?" The wind had started, and the mother felt them slowly start to disappear, dissolving, becoming nothing to appear again in an unknown number of years, separated and alone. She shuddered and breathed in.
"No," she lied again.
Then, along with the rest of the fantasy world they lived in, they disappeared.
End
