Prologue

Present day – Detective Chandler Hampton

Ohmygodohmygodohmygod is running through Chandler's head on a loop. He's been in shootings before, but this is a full-on fire fight and he has no hold on the situation. He takes a deep breath, listens to the melee, and tries to concentrate; okay, the timing and sounds of the shots mean that there are 5, maybe 6 shooters, and it seems like shots are coming from about 4 different directions and Jesus Christ! The window of the cop car he's crouched behind explodes above his head, glass raining down around him. Suddenly a figure appears to his right, lurching towards him with an awkward staggering gait. He cocks his gun and is ready to shoot at the first hint of a weapon, when the person steps into the pale beams of a streetlight and he can make out the features of his face.

"Robbie?" he asks. He lowers his gun and scrambles forward as Robbie stumbles and collapses to the sidewalk. Shots are still ringing out around them and Chandler unceremoniously drags Robbie the few more feet to the relative shelter of the squad car. Chandler looks down at the body of his friend laid out before him, and sees that his shirt is drenched in blood, and beneath a tear in the fabric is an ugly and jagged looking gunshot wound. Robbie's staring up at him with wild, panicked eyes, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth, and his breath coming in horrible, gurgling gasps. Chandler just stares back at him, his mind uselessly blank of all his first aid training from his academy days. Robbie reaches out a bloody hand and latches onto Chandler's forearm with a surprisingly strong grip. He tries to say something, but his mouth just moves wordlessly, no sound coming out.

"Hampton!" Simon is running towards him, gun drawn and coat flapping wildly behind him. "Backup is on the way. Did you manage to ID any of the shooters?"

Chandler realises that the shooting has stopped. The silence hanging around them is suddenly so apparent that he marvels at how he could have missed it. The night is eerily still and he can hear Simon panting lightly beside him.

"Jesus," Simon breaths, seeming to see Robbie for the first time. "Have you called it in yet? How's his airway? Pulse? Oh for fuck's sake, here," He pushes the unresponsive Chandler out of the way and presses his hands down over the gaping wound in Robbie's chest. "Call for an ambulance!" he shouts, when Chandler still fails to move.

Shaken out of his stupor, Chandler gingerly reaches he arm through the shattered car window to grab the two-way radio from the dash.

"Dispatch, this is Detective Hampton, squad car 6120. Requesting immediate medical assistance at Haven and Grand. We've got an officer down."
