The Dance:
Rated M
Inspired by Annie Proulx's characters and by the film BBM.
The dance, half unconsciously, had gone on for most of that summer: Old Rose whiskey shared, testing reactions to seemingly accidental naked flesh, watching, talking and listening.
In all his life Ennis had never felt so close to anyone save his mother.
The evening had dragged on, the sky had darkened with the first stars, but with the moon rising and the fire glow it was easy to still see each other. They'd talked and drank and now, lying down, they were drowsy, no words spoken. Their long legs resting against each others, had nudged playfully.
A gust of icy wind down from the mountain top made Jack shiver. Ennis was still protesting he had to go up to the sheep but as Jack saw it he couldn't have made it.
Jack tried to get Ennis into the tent with him but Ennis, who had pretended to be much more drunk than he seemed, said he'd stay near the fire, cautious still.
Later the cold wind bit and, exaggerating his chattering and moaning Ennis succeeded in waking Jack up. It was Jack then who invited him into the tent.
Ennis waited for him to make the next move, he thought it would be so, but fell asleep to be woken when Jack placed Ennis's hand on his erect cock. Half asleep he fought what was happening, he couldn't let himself be overpowered, he couldn't be at anyone's mercy.
Trying to gentle him Jack whispered 'c'mon', but Ennis was having none of it and overturned him roughly, mating with him as he had seen male ranch animals try to do at times, full on – was this the right way?
Jack who had only kissed and fooled around with men until now was unprepared for Ennis's full on approach, but said,'Fuck me Ennis' through gritted teeth as he endured first the terrible pain but which quickly turning to ecstasy as he climaxed, followed then by Ennis tipped over to completion by Jack's whimpering .
Both boys collapsed to the ground, Ennis covering Jack completely. In a short while they slept.
This is the end of the courtship dance and tomorrow Jack will go riding up the mountain still in pain to find Ennis who has spent the whole day with the sheep, and coax him down to the main camp.
That second night the courtship dance over and complete Ennis will come to Jack, be down on one knee, hat in hand – no courtship ritual this but, a proposal. That night they will become one body, heart and soul – married - beneath their honey moon. But there can be no wedding day for these lovers, no wedding day in the sight of the world.
