Liesl and Georg Vontrapp were sitting in his study one night deep in argument. Georg VonTrapp and his beautiful fiancé had announced their engagement to the children the previous morning. Every child had of course different reactions but all of them had been delighted. All except, Liesl. She didn't make her unhappiness known until tonight. She bravely walked down to her father's study and told him exactly what she thought of the marriage. She explained her fear was that her father was getting married for all the wrong reasons. She was unhappy because she was concerned that her Father might hurt her favorite person... Frauline Maria.
"Liesl, where on earth is all this coming from? What kind of man do you think I am?" Georg stood staring at his daughter utterly bewildered.
"Listen father, when you and Frauline Maria told us of your engagement, I couldn't fathom why yhe two of you would get married but I think I've come to a conclusion, if only I can say what I feel is happening here."
Georg only nodded his head as way of showing her to continue.
"Father, when a man reaches your age, he might start to wonder who's going to be there to take care of him."
"Yes he does."
"And he might even start looking for someone to replace his first wife."
"Yes he might."
"He might even be looking for ways to feel a little bit younger."
"Yes he certainly might." Liesl motioned for her father to sit down next to her on the sofa and he did.
"Well Father is that any reason to get married ? Just because a young and beautiful woman takes interest in you?"
"Liesl I see what you're getting at but that's not why I fell in love with Frauline Maria nor why I am marrying her."
"Then why are you marrying her father?" Liesl took her father's hand in hers
"Liesl when you spend 2 months watching the person you love most in this world slowly die...you wonder if you'll ever love again. After that if you can even think about marrying someone else then believes me there's only one reason, you're in love."
"I know mother's death hurt you badly father."
"Yes it did but I'm not talking about me I'm talking about Frauline Maria. Did you know that she was married before...then her husband passed away due to scarlet fever just like your mother. It hurt Frauline Maria so badly that she joined the Abbey never wishing to see the world again." Liesl looked at her father with her big doe eyes filled with tears.
"Liesl, Maria loves me and I love her and we want to get married."
Lies sighed. "I'm sorry father. I was just trying to help but it seems you don't need me anymore."
"That's not true, the reason Frauline Maria and I asked the children's permission is because we do need you. We need your blessing on our marriage."
Suddenly Maria came into the study looking rather bewildered.
"Oh I'm sorry I didn't know the two of you were busy." said Maria as she offered them an apologetic smile.
"Oh that's alright Frauline, I was just leaving. Only there is something I want to say to you first Frauline."
Lies walked over to Maria and took her hand in her own.
"Well it looks like we have more in common than we thought. We both love father and want him to be happy. So welcome to the family." Without giving Maria time to respond Liesl gave Maria a big hug and slowly left the study.
