The Galactic Senate.
The Galactic Senate was set up at the begging of the new Galactic Republic as a hope that they could avoid more massive scale combat across the galaxy. It was said by the newly elected Supreme Chancellor Palpatine that the Galactic Republic had stood for 1,000 years but it is rumoured that it had stood for 25,000 years meaning that the old Republic and the Galactic republic are one and the same.
