A Day In The Garden.

She won't pick bluebells, because they die almost as soon as they leave the earth.

"When you grow up," he says, "I'm going to marry you."

She smiles but doesn't say he won't, because it doesn't need saying. The sky is the colour of a sea of bluebells. Dickon has made a crown of white roses for her red hair.

The little grey lamb comes and sits in her white linen lap.  Dickon reaches over to pet the lamb, and Mary strokes it too. Their hands overlap, very gently.  They look at each other.

"I will," he says, but they're not listening.
