This day was the day. We were going to see the monster. The one behind our school.

At school, the really big fence surrounding our playground stopped us from getting to it. We watched it for a long time. It just stayed really still, like it was dead.

"It's a alligator," Emmett said. He pointed to the trees..

I didn't see an alligator. "Where?" I looked as hard as I could, but I just saw trees and sticks.

"Right there." He pointed again. His hand hit the fence.

I looked again. Behind one of the trees, there was a head looking out. I could see the nose. "I see it! I see it!"

"See what?" asked Isabella.

I didn't want to tell Isabella. She'd want to see it too. "Just the trees."

"Is it Tinkerbell?" she asked.

"A alligator," Emmett said. I wanted to hit him, but I'd get in timeout.

"Let me see." She pushed me against the fence. "Wow! Cool! I want to see it."

"Girls can't go," Emmett said. "It's for boys only."

"Can too," Isabella argued.

"We can't go," I said. "Miss Shelly said we have to play on the playground."

"You always get out." Isabella put her hands on her hips. "You go out there." She pointed to the hole in the fence.

"Yeah," Emmett said. "But no girls are allowed. Girls can't do it."

"Can too. Just let me."

"I want to go." I started walking to the hole in the fence. Miss Shelly was watching Alice on the swings. She wouldn't see me getting out.

I ran over.
