She doesn't usually get like this. Maybe once every couple centuries, but never this bad. She stood in front of a faded memorial of a young boy and his dog, heroically poised with a sword. She looked blankly at the words inscribed faintly on the marble.-Finn the human and Jake the dog, heroes of Ooo. May they rest in peace.- it read. She couldn't even read it anymore. She was the vampire queen, she never cried. No, crying showed weakness, something she hardly knew about. It was only a vague rumor to her. She just stood there unmoving, red eyes staring blankly at the statue. Then she closed her eyes. There was nothing she could have done anyway, why grieve about it. But for the first time in the centuries since their deaths, she felt pain. At first it was just shock, then just a numb feeling that ate away at her immortal lifespan. She felt pain. She felt defeated, something a queen should never feel, yet she still felt it. They were her best friends, some of her only friends. She gazed off in the distance towards the large pink tree overhanging the Candy Kingdom. Somewhere in the cheerful place her best friend, Bonnibel, was entombed. Finn, Jake, Bonnie, even Flamella, who had burned out long ago was gone. All gone. A choked, dry sob wracked her body and she fell onto her knees in front of the statue. She didn't cry, no she was too tough. Her long, raven hair obscured her face as she choked back more sobs. In her hand was a single, white rose, bleached of its color hours before. She threw it at the statue and crumpled in a heap. A twig snapped behind her but she didn't move. She didn't care, her unlife was over. The figure crouched down beside her and rubbed her back. She stiffened and peered through her curtain of hair at him. He was a tall man, with bluish skin, snow white hair and a beard of an impressive length.
"Did you know them?" he asked. All he got in reply was another dry sob. "I didn't know them, but I'm sorry you're hurting. It gets better," he comforted.
She spoke, her voice cracking, "Simon?" He cocked his head to one side, looking confused.
"I'm not Simon, I'm the Ice King," this time a tear slid down her face.
"Do you remember Bubblegum?" she asked in barely a whisper. He shook his head. "Do you remember me?" she asked again, dreading the answer.
"No," he said, "I think you're confusing me with someone else," she nodded, fighting the tears that wanted to consume her. "Was this Simon you're boyfriend or something?" he questioned.
She spoke sadly this time, no longer crying, just deadly solemn. "No. He's just somebody who I used to know,"
"Oh" he said. He got up and exited the cemetery without another word. As he reached the edge he hesitated as though remembering something, then continued away. All those times Finn and Jake beat him up, all those times he captured Bonnie. Gone. Just like everything else. She sat there for awhile. Not thinking about anything in particular. She felt a strange tingling throughout her body. She looked up and saw the sun beginning to rise on the horizon. She didn't leave this time. She stood and stared at the rock as she waited for her fate. She wasn't a vampire queen. She was Marceline.
