"I'm in so much trouble," Cam muttered as he looked at his watch. Practice had started over an hour ago, but he was no where near the rest of the team. No, instead he was sitting outside a classroom in an empty hallway hours after the final bell rang waiting on a girl who probably didn't even care he existed.
Campbell Saunders was not the brightest guy in school.
Originally, he planned on stopping by to say hi to her and then going about his way. So, after class ended, he walked to where he knew her locker was and said hello as politely as he could. She smiled and said hi and he thought that was the end of it. But then she started talking to him and he was so surprised to actually be holding a conversation with her that he stayed just a little longer to ask how her day was and one thing led to another until he agreed to walk her to her band practice. WhisperHug was what they were called. Strange, but Maya Matlin seemed a bit strange herself, so Cam didn't question it.
He didn't ask why her lanky, dark haired friend nudged her and smirked at the two of them or why she started blushing like crazy immediately following the incident. Maybe he didn't think much of it, or maybe he was just slow, but he didn't ask her a single question. Instead, he merely accepted the hug she gave him and smiled politely as he was about to be on her way.
But then she just had to ask if he wanted to walk home with her after practice. He couldn't just say no. That would have been rude. So he agreed to walk home with her, but his mouth worked faster than his brain and he made the fatal error that landed him in trouble in the first place.
"I can just wait for you. I'm not doing anything at all right now, it wouldn't be any trouble."
"You don't have to," Maya said with a sweet smile. "Besides, don't you have practice or something?" There was apause and he realized it had slipped his mind and he was faced with either owning up to his stupid mistake or playing it off. He chose the latter.
"Nope, no practice today," he said, but he was lying through his teeth. Maya couldn't tell. She smiled happily and nodded her head, a bit unsure of what to do next in their situation.
"I'll see you in a while then," she stated, somewhat awkwardly as Cam nodded his head to the same beat as hers.
"Yeah. A while," Cam agreed. The silence between them was quickly interrupted by her lanky, dark haired friend who shot Cam a smirk before tugging on Maya's wrist.
"Sorry to cut in but our band needs Maya." And with that, she was whisked away and it dawned on Cam just how stupid he was and how much trouble he'd be in. And he'd keep thinking and stressing and worrying until the band practice finally ended and she rejoined him with an innocent smile on her face.
"Sorry to keep you waiting," Maya said. "Ready to go?" He looked up and smiled slightly, rising from where he'd been sitting on the ground. It was way too late to show up at practice and he'd be in so much but it was worth it. She was worth it.
"Yeah," Cam said. "I'm ready."
