Why do I like writing the young Pines twins so much? Almost everyone else on here writes them as teens and older. Whatever...
Also, this takes place later in my headcanon than in the show, because for it to work I need the events of There For You to have already taken place, so Dipper can have his nickname back and have the hat from the show's flashback. So don't think of it as taking place on picture day... think of it as picture retake day :)
Anyway, enjoy!
Mrs. Pines had just settled into the couch with a cup of coffee and her favorite sitcom when she heard the phone ring. She groaned and went to the kitchen to answer the landline.
"Hello?" she said, trying to withhold the annoyance she felt from reaching her voice.
"Is this Lynn Pines?" A female voice said on the other end.
"Yes, that's me." Mrs. Pines listened for a while, then yelled out, "They did WHAT?! Yeah... I'll be over there in a minute."
She hopped in the car, not even bothering to change out of her leisure outfit, and was at Eggbert Elementary in record time.
"Dipper and Mabel Pines, you two ar-" She began as she stormed into the front office, only to be silenced by the sight. It was worse. It was so much worse than she had imagined. Her son and daughter were both looking down, each missing a perfect line of their hair down the middle of their heads.
"Mrs. Pines, I presume?" The lady at the front desk, who had the same voice as the caller, said. Mrs. Pines nodded, embarrassed. "Mr. Linville is letting them go home early today. Can you come sign the checkout sheet, please?"
"Oh, uh, of course."
After signing the sheet, Mrs. Pines picked up the twins' backpacks and ordered them out to the car. It was silent the entire ride home, which to Dipper and Mabel, was even worse than getting yelled at.
Finally, once they were all inside the house, Mrs. Pines spoke. "What were you two thinking?" She kneeled down and examined Mabel's hair. "Aw, Mabel, it was so pretty. What are we going to do?" She turned to her son. "And Dipper, you were finally happy with the length... do you know how long this is gonna take to grow back?" She sighed, and looked at both of them. "Why would you guys do this to yourselves?" she asked, biting her lip, still fiddling with their hair to try and make it seem better than it was.
"How else would we fix the gum?" Dipper said, pushing his mother's hand away.
"What?" Mrs. Pines blinked at them.
"Right before pictures... Missy stuck her gum in Mabel's hair."
"So Dipper and me fixed it together," Mabel finished.
Mrs. Pines looked the twins innocent faces, then back at their disastrous hairstyles. And she began to laugh. First just sniffing, then giggling, then finally rolling with laughter.
Of course. Of course that's what happened.
Dipper and Mabel looked at each other, unsure what to make of their mom's... unexpected reaction.
"Okay, okay..." Mrs. Pines finally said, calming herself down. "I get it." She suddenly changed back to her 'angry Mom' voice. "Don't think I'm not still upset with you two!" She quieted again. "But okay. We'll work this out.
She pulled both of them into a hug before saying, "Now who wants to help me explain this to your father?"
