The Thing about Scary Games
A Legend of Zelda Fanfiction
by I Need Sleep
Author's Note: A short one. I found my old powerpoint with fanfic ideas and I just decided to get this out. Probably out of character. Alternate universe where they are regular people who play videogames together at night. Shhh, guilty fantasies.
"Go down that hallway, I think the key is in one of those rooms."
How did he get here?
Link lounged back on the bed with Zelda lying next to him, relaxed. She was leaning against his chest, eyes trained upon to the laptop screen. He had one arm slung around her, fingers resting lightly upon 'W-A-S-D'. His other hand held a mouse, which was on top of a book – their crude hard surface. The nightlight next to him shone bright and the glare on the screen would have annoyed him.
Except it didn't, because he was glad it was there.
Nonchalantly, he directed his player down the dark hallway, ears attuned for creaking doors and heavy footsteps. Zelda, his girlfriend, watched with interest – her body was still, not wanting to startle Link. Her breathing was even. His? Not so, although he did remind himself to regulate his breathing to not alarm her.
Save for the nightlight, the lights were off. The door to their bedroom was shut. There was no one else home. Silence enveloped the room. Link shivered, and pulled Zelda closer. No, no – he was not scared. No way.
Suddenly, they heard moaning, and his knees jerked wildly. He had almost dropped the laptop, but thankfully slender fingers wrapped around one corner to keep it steadied. He cleared his throat. Courage.
"You know," Zelda broke the silence, making Link jerk from surprise again, "if you're afraid, we can stop."
"Me? Afraid?" he echoed, trying to muster bravado. To his own ears, the question fell flat. "No way."
She gave him a sly look, before shrugging. "Suit yourself," she said. "But you might want to run – I saw a monster patrolling that hallway and I think he saw you."
Sure enough, there was a monster there, waddling towards him. He let out a shriek and slammed the laptop shut.
"I think it's time for bed," he said, trying to slow down his heart. He could still see the brute coming at him. Zelda giggled.
"A wise choice," she said, before she leaned over and reached for the switch to the nightlight. "Well, goodnight!"
"Actually," he interrupted, grabbing her hand and stopping her from turning on their only source of light. "Can we sleep with that on tonight?"
She retracted her hand and said, "okay." She leaned back into the bed and pulled the sheets up to her chin. Zelda watched Link swiftly place the laptop down on to the floor – there was no way he was getting up at this point to put it on the desk at the other side of the room. She giggled and moved closer. "Goodnight, Link."
He wrapped his arms around her again and held her tight. "Night, Zelda," he said, before shutting his eyes forcefully.
"We'll be fine, you big baby. I've got you."
"Thanks, Zellie."
Author's Note: Zelda might've come across as more Tetra than Zelda. Inspired by when my boyfriend and I sat down and played Amnesia: the Dark Descent together and he pretended to act all macho. Also, no one is going to be reading this - I'm watching 58,000+ people Pokemon together. Come, join us.
