Winry was sitting on a bench in her automail shop in Rush Valley. Her last customer of the day had just left, and she was exhausted. Just as she was contemplating getting up and going home, the phone rang. She crossed the room and answered it.
"Hello." She said, wondering was calling her after hours.
"Hey Winry, it's Ed." The familiar voice of her childhood friend reached her ears and she smiled unwittingly.
"What's up? Did you break your automail again?"
"What, I can't just call to check up on an old friend?"
"You never have before."
"Really? Are you sure?"
"The last time you called me for something other than an automail repair was when you found out I was a hostage of the Fuhrer."
"Oh, well, there's a first time for everything!"
"Haha, yeah. Have you heard from Al lately?"
"Yeah, he's still in Xing. He's been studying alkahestry with Mei."
"Did Ling end up being Emperor?"
"Yeah, and he's kept his word about helping out Mei's clan."
"That's good. What about his friend, Lan Fan?"
"Oh, you didn't hear? They're engaged, getting married next month."
"Really? Good for them." There was a short pause before Ed broke the silence.
"How are things in Rush Valley?"
"They're good. I've been really busy."
"I was thinking of coming back home for a bit, is there a time coming up when you won't be so busy?"
"Yeah! I'm planning a trip to Resembool to visit Granny in a few weeks."
"Alright, I'll call Al; see if he can come too."
"That would be great! Well, I'm pretty tired, I'm gonna head home soon." Winry stifled a yawn.
"Well, I'll let you go then. I'll call when I've made plans."
"Bye Ed."
"Bye Winry." She put the receiver down and sighed, and then she smiled. Ed's coming home.
