Avalanche upon avalanche of rock fell upon Rodan and his mate, who roared in terror in a cavern across from him. Smoke billowed out from the crater, obscuring the area around the prehistoric reptile. Rodan knew that the south exit would soon be targeted, and he cawed out to his mate, telling her to make a break for it. She cawed back, and both slipped into the caverns. The ground shook underneath the two monsters, and Rodan knew it wasn't just from the missiles. The volcano was close to erupting. This was their last chance to get to freedom.
Rodan was the first to break free to the surface, taking to the air instantly. He cawed in triumph and circled around the now exploding crater, waiting for his mate to surface. Her caws of terror could be heard coming from the crater, and Rodan was beginning to get worried. That worry was abolished when she finally broke free... but was reestablished when a plume of lava broke free along with her. She managed to fly up to him, but the change in drafts around the volcano and being bombarded with missiles brought her down, screaming, into the lava. Rodan shrieked in terror, flying in low to try to rescue his mate from the lava streams that surrounded her. She screamed in pain, flapping her burning wings uselessly, struggling to save herself. Her cries were weakening, the spark of life granted to her after being sealed in the mines for thousands of years fading.
Rodan hovered in the air for a moment, before throwing himself down into the burning lava. If she could not live, then he wouldn't either. That was the law of nature the Rodans followed. Flames licked hungrily at Rodan's skin, and he screamed in pain. Rodan and his mate sunk against the earth, calling to each other, promising that they'll never be apart. The flames greedily consumed them, burning away every last trace of the masters of the earth and sky. Every last trace of the terror the pair had wrought in Japan. Every last trace of their short reign, before being dethroned by man. Every last trace....except for their unyielding love for each other.
