For so long I wondered what I should do. If I could have done things differently.
"Stop. Gray. It's over. The decision is made. I'm not changing my mind."
The candle light from the window ceil flickered begging for solace. A cool light breeze blew in from outside smelling of jasmine and pine blew against young Gray Fullbuster's flushed face. Daring to take a step forward, the blisters on his palm once again irritated as he balled up his small hands into tiny fists.
"Ultear nee-chan... You are all I have... Why... Why are you trying to make me suffer again?! Why?!"
Ultear remained emotionless trying hard not to look into Gray's eyes. She couldn't break. It was for his sake that she remained strong.
"Gray... You're in this world... For a different matter. This isn't how you're supposed to live. Here.. With these criminals... You're worth more than that. You may not realize this now but believe me it's for you own good. You're going to wake up one day and-"
"But I just want to stay here with you, Nee-chan! That's all I want! I don't care if I die here but please don't leave me! ... Please..."
A heavy, dense cloud of smoke brushed over them immediately making Gray drop to the floor unconscious. The candle from the ceil had tipped over knocking the flames into the curtains. As the broken down wooden cabin began to catch fire, Ultear hoisted Gray over her shoulder and began hurrying down the steep slope of the ridge. The land they began running to was practically lifeless. But Ultear had brought the last of the money, food, and supplies to usher Gray's journey.
"Are you sure about this, Ultear? This is the last of the trips I'm making. He won't be able to come back."
The carriage driver threw in the last of Grays belongings in next to the sleeping boy.
"They are going to be looking for me... I only have enough for him. And where he's going... I'll be of no use."
Ultear's eyes began to water as she caressed the young boy's face giving him a long painful kiss to the forehead.
"I'm really sorry, Gray. Really sorry."
The carriage driver looked down at her and the boy and couldn't help but sigh with deep regret.
"Why does it seem just that a hero must die this way..."
The woman swallowed back her watering eyes giving one last glance back at the carriage moving farther and farther east.
'Though my time has passed, my legacy will live on through you... Gray.'
Okay so I wrote this at 2am… because I couldn't sleep. So forgive me if some of it doesn't make sense. This is sort of an AU. um… like I was thinking kind of what if they were siblings and she had no choice but to give up her little brother because they had more they had to do but Ultear was terminally sentenced to the death camp. and She helped Gray escape to save the world. Yes, Ultear was a hero. She saved nations and the nation loved her. But they Queen conspired to frame her and Ultear had no choice but to agree because they would have killed her last hope. (Gray, btw..) so she said "Okay! Take me to the camp. I will serve my sentence." and everyone was like noooooooo. so. Yeah. that was the back story. She died for her nation in order to be able to have a second chance at saving the world. Pretty cool concept if you ask me. :)
