A/N: I am SO going to hell for this, aren't I? Anyway, welcome to this weird, goofy little tale obviously based upon the Disney Junior series, Sofia the First. To be completely honest, I'm not sure how this came about, I was simply listening to the soundtrack one day it came to me. There's just something about Sofia that reminds me of Anne sometimes, perhaps it's the way she's not afraid to be herself or break boundaries no matter what everyone thinks.
I'm going to warn all of you right now that this is nothing amazing considering the plotline. The writing is a little more simplistic than my usual works. Plot wise, I kept in some of the magic elements, such as the castle sorcerer, the magic jewels and the pegasi (which are specially bred for long-distance travel, but not used on a regular basis), but much of it is also taken out. The talking animals are now maids and Anne isn't as enthusiastic about magic as Sofia, nor are the royals taught it, as it's left to specialized sorcerers.
I'm going to stop rambling now and let you (the audience) decide what to think. And, don't hesitate to drop me a review, I love knowing what others' think.
Once Upon a Princess
Cast
Royal Family of Ingletara
Princess Anne Boleyn (16): Disgraced by her father, she was forced to move to the country with her mother where they became seamstresses until the king began courting Elizabeth. Due to her time away from nobles, Anne has forgotten touches of proper manners and royal protocol, but is eager to learn again. She often finds trouble fitting into the royal world and can be insecure about it, mainly after being told she was useless her whole life. However, despite her past and insecurities, Anne is strong-willed and stubborn. She likes what she likes, and when she makes up her mind, no one can change it. Unfortunately, sometimes her stubbornness can get the best of her and reveal a bad temper, but she also has a sweet side and is extremely close to her mother, the only person allowed to call her "Sweetheart". Though she enjoys reading and writing and studying, she also has an interest in more active activities and would rather be riding her horse and climbing trees than setting tables or doing needlepoint.
Princess Catalina Trastamara (Catalina de Aragon, 17): Daughter of King Ferdinand of Ingletara and the late Isabella de Castille and Duchess of Aragon. She takes heavily after her mother and speaks fluent Spanish, which often worms its way into her speech (i.e. she says "Gracias" instead of "Thank You"). She wasn't too fond of Anne at first, constantly finding ways to humiliate her through pranks, but they grow to understand each other in time. Catalina can have an entitled attitude at times and believes that "más es major." She enjoys court life and traditional "Princess Things" such as needlepoint and tea parties, activities that share time her political knowledge and interests. Like her stepsister, Catalina can have a stubborn streak and a temper (though hers isn't as bad), which, along with their vastly different attitudes, leads them to butt heads every now and again. She is particularly close with her father, who affectionately calls her "Mi Belleza" and they've been known to take days for just each other. She also harbours affections for Prince Henry of Whitehall and is often seen in his group of princess followers.
Prince Charles Trastamara (Charles, Holy Roman Emperor, 17): Royal heir to the throne of Ingletara and Catalina's twin brother, who is younger by a few minutes and often reminded of it. In the beginning he was far more eager to help Anne with her court etiquette than her sister and has a calmer attitude than either of his sisters. Charles enjoys sports and is on the Royal Prep derby and tennis teams. However, while he has strength in sports, he sometimes lacks strength in academic areas, his weakest area being arithmetic. Regardless of his occasional academic weakness, he takes his studies seriously and always tries his best, even when he's down. Oftentimes, court life can bore him, as, he'd rather be outside instead of dancing in circles and his active demeanor gives him a common ground with his stepsister.
Queen Elizabeth Howard: Anne's mother, Queen Consort of Ingletara. She was thrown out and disgraced by her previous husband, Thomas Boleyn, who acts as one of King Henry VII's advisors. After being turned out on the street, Elizabeth ended up heading from Whitehall to Ingletara and starting a new life with her daughter with the help of several kind villagers. Ferdinand began his courtship after she and Anne were commissioned to make him a new winter cloak and he became smitten at the fitting, after which Elizabeth was often called back to do other seamstressing duties while he increasingly fell for her. However, due to her previous marriage falling through, she was reluctant to trust him and it was over a year before she finally accepted his affections and proposal. Elizabeth is typically the quiet, calm type but can be confrontational when provoked, especially regarding her daughter. Though she has three biological children and two stepchildren, Anne has held a special place in her heart since her birth and initial rejection by her father. Due to Thomas' cruelty and ignorance of his second daughter's existence, Elizabeth took it upon herself to do what she could to make up for the lack of affection and stability in Anne's life as she watched her father dump attention on her brother and sister. Though it's been occasionally difficult for her to study laws and politics, Elizabeth does her best to do so and assist her husband with matters in the kingdom. When not invested in diplomatic matters, she enjoys sketching and sewing, often designing and making dresses for herself and Anne.
King Ferdinand Trastamara II: Reigning king over Ingletara, an English/Spanish land, father to Princess Catalina and Prince Charles, stepfather to Princess Anne and husband first to the late Isabella de Castille and then Elizabeth Howard of Whitehall. He is kind, welcoming and cares more for character than status, as seen through his courting of and marriage to Elizabeth Howard. He can be authoritative when required, such as in diplomatic matters, but is typically impassive and likes to divide his attention between his kingdom and his family, due to his own lonely childhood as his parents' focus on diplomatic matters overtook his family obligations, leaving him and his sister, Juana, in the care of several nurses and servants. When Anne and Elizabeth enter the picture, he puts extra effort into making them happy and making their second life adjustment as easy as possible, and sometimes struggles in his relationship with his stepdaughter, as she is wary of him at times due to having only known a cruel father. After her arrival at the palace, he presented her with her beloved, Amethyst necklace, thinking it would help and protector, as, it was said to have special powers to do so. He loves all of his children and makes it a point to set aside time for each of them when he can, though he sometimes has trouble doing so with Anne. When not invested in either his kingdom or family, Ferdinand divides his time between quiet and active activities, such as reading and hawking. He is also a rather private person and feels no need to make every kingdom aware of his business and reveals that, despite his training, he's not the best dancer.
Castle Staff
Thomas Cromwell ("Cromwell"): The main castle steward and supervisor over the other servants. Cromwell's job is to make sure everything is in place at all times, which has led to him becoming a bit stiff and routine oriented at times. However, he's also kind and patient and has a soft spot for Anne, having had to struggle to rise up himself, and has given her advice and assistance on more than one occasion. He is very dedicated to his job, presumably because he worked so hard to get it and always puts the royal family's needs before his own.
Margaret, Joan, Alice: Anne's personal maids whom she often confides in, Alice is the oldest and Margaret the youngest. They not only help Anne with her cleaning and lessons, but often join the other servants in the castle when not required to stay with their mistresses. They also possess a handful of knowledge about things outside of the palace, and can easily navigate the forrest around it due to often traveling through it to pick berries or commandeer assistance from the local woodsmen. They all have an interesting, open relationship with their mistress, as Anne is rarely ever commanding and always kind to them, never taking them for granted, which they appreciate.
Thomas Wyatt ("Wyatt"): Anne's personal steward who makes sure her schedule is straight and assists her with her lessons. He's a poet on the side and is often seen contemplating and writing when not busy with his duties, which often include editing papers and poems for his charge. He's always kind and patient with her, even when she's angry at him and believes in taking things a day at a time. He also loves to eat and is often looking for extra food, some of which he gained thanks to Anne and her informing the King of his and the other servants' need for more.
Thomas Wolsey ("Wolsey"): Wolsey is the court sorcerer, whom Ferdinand claims that they're "stuck with." Wolsey's job often involves using magic for events and shows for the family, and occasionally helping the children out of rough spots, though he would rather be supplanting them and using his magic to take over and run the kingdom his own way. He makes plans to take over the kingdom in secret and is after Anne's treasured, amethyst necklace, knowing it does contain a magical power that can be manipulated in his favour. However, despite this, he can be kind of clumsy and his spells often don't work out very well. Though he is often annoyed by Anne due to her easy thwarting of his plans and her attitude, and not particularly fond of the King due to his criticisms, he appears rather passive to the other members of the royal family, presumably because they don't really get in his way. And, though he does plot to overthrow the royals, Wolsey is not truly evil, he simply wants to exercise power of those that have mocked him and prove that he's worth something. He has a pet raven, Moore, who protects his workshop.
Royal Preparatory Academy
"Royal Prep"
Katherine Parr & Anna Cleves: Headmistresses of Royal Prep. They watch over the students as they attend lessons of various degrees and often act as guides to Anne.
Master Kingston: Stable master, riding teacher and derby coach. Master Kingston is an old fashioned type of man who believes that mean and women have their respective places, and, as a result, wasn't fond of the idea of Anne even thinking of trying out for the derby team. However, he realises his mistake and recognises her talent, giving her place and eagerly training her along with the princes.
Professor Cornish: Dance teacher and masque coordinator. Due to his reputation and results at Royal Prep he's been known to organise masques for kingdom courts and was even charged with the direction of the main masques during the annual, Summer Celebration in Whitehall. Cornish loves his job and through enjoys passing on the art of dance to his students. However, he can be overly eager and is sometimes impatient when new dances aren't learned on his schedule and when people fool about during rehearsals.
Princess Jane Seymour (17): One of Catalina's best friends and Princess of Wulfhall. She's generally quiet and reserved and her favourite colour is pink. Jane appears to be spared of an entitled attitude and is very patient, as show during the slumber party when she showed kindness to Anne's friends and answered their questions kindly. She reveals that Wulfhall is a generally warm kingdom whose main export is flowers, with one being named for each member of the royal family, including herself.
Prince Edward, Princess Elizabeth & Prince Thomas Seymour: Jane's siblings
Princess Katherine "Kitty" Howard (15): Catalina's other best friend and Princess of Chesworth. She's bright and boppy and loves to laugh, however, due to propriety, this side can often be hidden between a spoiled, entitled attitude. She has a purebred, Persian cat, Louise.
Prince Francis Valois (17): Prince of Aquitaine and Charles' best friend. He and Charles share an interest in athletics, though his strength is Jousting, whereas Charles is racing. They are often partnered together in projects and both have an interest in knights, warfare and canons that's typically mixed in with their normal studies. Francis is a self-proclaimed ladies' man, and is often seen with groups of princesses. However, he often fights for his title with Prince Henry.
Prince Henry Tudor (18): Prince of Whitehall and Catalina's love interest. He's a member of the jousting and derby teams and relishes in glory. He is described as overzealous, arrogant and sometimes, supercilious. Henry suffers from being the second, spoiled son, and can have an entitled attitude, which is often corrected by his father. Though he can be a poor sport at times, he is shown to be fair, an example being his disgust with Edward's cheating and attempts to knock Anne out of the derby tryout race. Due to the way he was raised, Henry can be the traditional type and doesn't like it when things are out of place socially. He's madly in love with Anne, but hides it by relentlessly picking on her, especially when he learns of her close relationship with her mother, which mirrors his own relationship with his mother.
Prince Arthur, Princess Mary & Princess Margaret Tudor: Henry's siblings.
Prince Pierre Volarè (16): Original character and Prince of Calais. Pierre is generally a shy, quiet type of guy and would rather be tending to his vegetable garden than worry about his princely duties. He's Anne's love interest and is able to come out of his shell after spending some time with her. However, while he is close with Anne, he does still struggle in reaching out to his peers due to a fear of being judged. When at home is often in the company of his cousin, Bridgette, a young, thirteen year old girl who often ropes him into playing with or teaching her new skills. It's been implied that he's closer to his mother than his father, due to Ariane having a more understanding nature towards her son while his father pushes him to be more like his older brother.
Prince Alain: Pierre's older brother and graduate of Royal Prep who usually pretends Pierre doesn't exist. However, it's implied that he's been more open to helping him after his fondness for Anne is revealed.
