He was fading. Fading from his kingdom and all he knew. He struggled with each breath, but not enough air filled his lungs, making his breath deep and hard, his chest heaving. His gray hair was fanned out against a white silk pillow. His eyes were closed. He knew his time had come.
Queen Arwen held her kings hand, never wanting to let go, never wanting him to leave her all alone. But she knew he would, in a matter of short time. A silver tear slid down her pale cheek as she watch him fight for his life.
"It is not my time," King Elessar thought. "I do not wish to leave my family. I do not want to leave my son and daughters. I do not wish to leave my wife. I do not want her to be alone."
Legolas, Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Gandalf and Gimli were in the backgroud, tears sliding down their cheeks as they said their final goodbyes to their beloved friend. ((A/N Ok ok I KNOW that this isn't accurate. I know Frodo and Gandalf are supposed to be in the undying lands and that Aragorn lets himself go and all of that stuff. So please don't flame and I am a total and complete lord of the rings nut so I know what happens!)) Legolas quickly wiped a tear from his eye, trying to be strong. Merry and Pippin's lips were trembling at the sight of his weak and frail body struggling to stay on this earth for a few more moments.
Arwen stared in disbelief at him. His breathing was becoming shallower and she knew that it was near the end. Tears unchecked and silent slid down her face. Her eyes were fixed on him, feeling the same strong love she had felt when she first met him. Yet, she felt a coldness, she felt death reaching for him. She brought his hand up to her mouth and kissed it.
Aragorn felt her kiss his hand and he smiled. Arwen saw his smile and a shadow of a smile slid onto her face. His grip tightened slightly on her hand. His eyes slowly opened.
"Arwen..." He tried to speak.
Arwen put a hand to his lips, tears staining the bedsheets.
"Shhh, it's alright, I'm here." Her voice shook as she spoke.
He smiled up at her. "I..I promise you my...Evenstar. I...will...hold you...again."
His eyes slowly closed and his hand went limp and cold in hers. He was gone. Arwen felt his spirit leave the room. She felt so alone, even though the rest of the fellowship was with her. All of the memories of their short life came flooding back, happy times, sad times, the day that she bore him his son, their wedding day. They were so bittersweet she could not stand it. She laid her head on his chest and cried. The fellowship bowed their heads in respect for the fallen King, and Legolas softly recited an elven prayer. He was gone, forsaking Middle Earth for the halls of Mandos, never to return.
Dawn will turn
to silver glass
A light on the water
All souls pass...
