The decades of isolation and sadness were coming to an end. He did not know why, but Erik was aware that his time on this earth was nearly over. He would no longer need to hide. His pain of losing Christine would continue no longer.
Yes, he let her go willingly, but she was still the only woman he ever loved. Even after her death, he came once a year to place a red rose at her grave. At least he knew her life had been happy. Maybe death would give him his long-awaited peace.
Before his life would be snuffed out, he longed to visit the Countess de Chagny's grave one last time. To make the final one special, Erik had gotten a white rose instead in hope of things changing for the better from one life to the next. Erik longed to be reunited with the angel who sang his music.
So as not to disturb the peace and draw unwanted attention, he waited late that night to walk to the cemetery. The stars shone dimly as he navigated the snow-covered ground. The snow did not crunch under his feet. All of this gave him the aura needed for his final appearance like a ghost.
He kneeled at the tombstone of his long-lost love. After placing the rose down, he glanced up at the sky. The stars were dimming one by one. The upcoming dawn was leading to the end of his masquerade. There was no reason to hide from the world anymore.
He removed his mask and placed it next to the rose. As he gave up on himself, he softly sang the words he longed to finish long ago. "Anywhere you go let me go too. Christine, that's all I ask of you…"
They used up the last of his breath. As the sun began to rise, his two final tears fell on the mask and the rose petals. The transition from life to death changed one key thing: he used to be her angel. Now she was his.
A/N: Yeah, it's short. Sorry about that. But I'm happy with how this turned out. Hopefully you are too. Thanks for reading!
