What The Future Could Have Been

Summary: What would happen if Max had kept his son.
Author's Note: The setting continues from the ending of "Four Aliens & A Baby". One thing that didn't happen in this story that happened in the show is the scene where Max and his father discuss putting up Zan for adoption.
Max and Liz are sitting on the Evans' front porch talking.
"So you decided to keep him?" – Liz
"Yeah... I was looking for him for so long and then I gave up and now that he is here. I don't think that I can let him go."
"I can understand that. (looking at Zan) He is cute."
"So you don't mind?"
"No."
"Thank you."
Zan starts crying and fussing.
"Can you take him for a minute ... I need to get his bottle."
"Ok."
Max handed Zan to Liz. As soon as he put the baby in Liz's arms he stopped crying. Max was just amazed.
"Wow ... (smiling) I'll be right back."
Liz Nodded and looked down at Zan has Max went inside. She still was a little surprised that he had stopped crying when he was put into her arms, but right now that didn't manner to her.
"Hi, Zan, I'm Liz ... your daddy's girlfriend. And I'll be here if you need me for anything. You're probably going to meet a lot of people in the next few days. Like Maria, she can be a little weird sometimes, but don't tell her that I told you that. And then there's Michael, he's a rebel, but he has lighted up a little bit since I have known him. And I think that some of that has to do with Maria. I think that they belong together, just like your daddy and I. I think that Michael knows this and so does Maria, but they just don't see how to be together. One thing that you have to know about those two is that if they are arguing then everything is fine with them. It is when they are not arguing that something is wrong. And right now they are not arguing and they are also not together. But I know that they still like each other. I'm trying to figure out a way to get them back together. But I haven't had any ideas. So if you up with any ideas let me know. And then there are your Aunt Isabel and Uncle Jesse. Your aunt has changed a lot in three years. You know what I think I hear your daddy coming so we can finish our little talk later."
The whole time that Liz was talking, Zan looked like he was hanging on every word that she had said, but for just being a few months old, he had know idea what the words that she just said meant.
Just then Max came out with a bottle.
"Here we go ... so what have you two been up to?"
"Just talking." (smiling)
Max handed Liz the bottle and she began feeding Zan.
"So are you going to continue to live at Michael's?"
"Well my parents are letting me stay here for a while, but I'm going to start looking for an apartment."
"That's good. Maybe we can look for an apartment together."
"Liz ... are you sure?"
"Well graduation is coming up and I know that I got into Harvard, but now with everything going on, I don't want to go."
"Liz this has been your dream for a long time."
"I know and my parents aren't going to like fact of me not going, but I want to be here with you."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes."
Max leaned over and kissed her, but when they started the bottle slipped from Zan's mouth and Zan made a little sound that made Max and Liz part and look at Zan.
"Oh sorry." – Liz
Liz put the bottle back in Zan's mouth.
"Liz ... I was thinking what if we changed his name?"
"To what?" (looking up at Max, surprised about this)
"Well, I was thinking Alexander."
"Really."
"Yeah I mean it still has the Zan part in it, but I think that we should after Alex."
"Yeah, I think that would be good."
