Confusion and Darkness
The girl opened her
eyes only to find darkness. She tried
again only to get the same result.
"Catie are you awake?" a male voice to her left said. She turned to the voice expecting to see a
face, but sees only continuing darkness.
"Am
I Catie?" She asks in a timid voice.
Not sure if the male voice was
talking to her or someone else in the room, or who the male voice even was.
"Yes,
you are. You don't know who are?" He
asked in a soft voice.
"No,
it's weird I can't seem to remember how I got here? Why I can't see anything?
I don't even know who you are," She says.
"Well,
I wouldn't expect you to know who I am because you've never met me before. You can't see because you were blinded in a
plane crash. You're here in a hospital
because you were severely injured in the crash," He said. After he was finished she heard him get up.
"Where
are you going?" She asked worried he was going to leave her alone in the dark.
"I'm just going to go
get the doctor," He reassured her, "I'll be right back," She heard the door the
shut and then began to try to process the information she had just received. She was someone named Catie, who she could
remember nothing about. She was blinded
in a plane crash, and she had no idea where her parents were.
Just
then she heard the door open. "So Catie
I hear you can't remember anything?" Another male voice asked she assumed was
the doctor's.
"No,
I can't," She stated simply.
"Well,
it's probably just a side effect of the head injury. It can come back at any time or not at all. We'll just have to wait," The doctor said
and this didn't reassure her too much.
"Will
I be able to see again?" She asked
nervously. She hoped the answer would
be yes, but she wasn't going to get her hopes up too much. The doctor paused and made the girl worry.
"I'm
sorry to say this but the loss of sight will probably be permanent," The doctor
said in a voice full of sympathy, but the girl didn't want sympathy. She wanted her memory and sight back, "Is that
all?" The doctor asked and then the girl heard the door shut and assumed that
he had left.
"I
guess now would be a good time to introduce myself. I'm Harm, your mother's cousin," Harm said.
"Where
is my mom or my dad for that matter?" The girl said asking question that had
been on her mind.
"Well,
your parents and your brothers and sisters were killed in the crash," Harm said
as gently as he could. The girl felt a
great sense of loss, she didn't even remember them and now they were dead.
"Did
anyone else survive?" The girl asked assuming that the answer would be
yes. Well, at least hoping that it was.
"I'm
sorry to say the answer is no. You were
the only survivor," Harm said trying to choose the right words.
