Sunshine and Gunpowder
Post season 4 finale. Just a little something I had in my head. Hope you like it. Deeks was shot and left for dead, but found by Callen and Kensi.
Kensi stands at the door of the hospital room, arms folded, leaning up against the wall. She watches Deeks asleep in the bed. After all the effort she put into saving him, now he won't wake up. No one knows why. He just won't.
"Sometimes they go under and just never find their way back." The doctor told her.
"He can hear you. If you want to talk to him." The nurse says as she writes something in his chart.
"Really?"
"I like to think so." She finishes and leaves the room closing the sliding door as she exits. Kensi just stares at her partner not sure what to say. The beeping of the machine is the only noise in the room. Kensi does't like quite. She misses Deeks filling the silences.
"This isn't fair you know. You've been shot twice now and both times I had to stand here and wait for you to get your head straight and come back to me." Kensi looks for any change in the machines. "Look, I don't want your cryogenically frozen body in my apartment for the rest of my life. So if you can do me favor and just open your eyes." Still no change.
"It's such a pain breaking in a new partner. I got used to the sarcasm and the banter. What am I supposed to do if the next guy is boring? What if he's, God forbid, professional. What if it's a girl?" Kesni imitates Deeks, "Only in my dreams." Kensi walks over and sits by his bed. "You don't get to do this. You don't get to make me fall for you and then...You promised." Kensi reaches out and takes his hand. "You have to wake up. You can't kiss me and not wake up." Kensi put her head down on his chest and whispers, "Please wake up."
Deeks's hand twitches in hers. "Deeks?" Kensi watches as Deeks eyes flutter open. Her heart almost stops mid-beat. "Deeks!"
"Fern." He whispers.
"Are you gong to call me that every time you wake up from a gun shot?"
Deeks tries to smile. Instead he lets out a small sound of pain. "Don't try to do, well, anything." She walks back to the door. "Doctor, he's awake." The doctor and nurse enter the room.
"Do you mind waiting outside while we run some tests?" the nurse asks.
"Okay." Kensi reluctantly steps into the hallway making sure she can still see Deeks through the glass. She pulls out her phone. "Hetty? He's awake." Kensi watches as the doctor talks to Deeks and writes things in his chart. She doesn't take her eyes off Deeks while the nurse adjusts some settings on the machines then walks with the doctor back into the hallway.
"How is he?"
"Better then expected. He's fully conscious, and there doesn't seem to be any brain damage. The complications with the gun shot wound have subsided and the damage to his mouth has been repaired. He's incredibly strong."
"Yes he is."
"He has a ways to go before he is fully recovered but he's out of the woods."
"Thank you doctor." Kensi goes back and sits down next to him. Deeks immediately reaches for her hand. Kensi doesn't hesitate to take his hand in hers. "The doctor says you're going to be fine. He said there are no signs of brain damage, but he doesn't know you like I do." Deeks attempts to laugh but it is immediately followed by pain. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'll just sit here." Kensi brushes her hand up and down Deeks's arm. "Right here."
Just a one shot. What do you think?
