-Narrator's POV-

"Complicated, that's what you said, right?"

She nodded, "But it's a bit more than that, no?"

He sighed. "More than giving up the fight. It's just..." he felt winded, lost another sigh.

"Just our poor luck?" she finished. "It's no good, so.."

"So I leave?" He said, ready to take flight.

"Wait!" She grabbed him suddenly, "No, please. Don't go."

Stood in front, one figure mirroring the other. "I want you to stay."

Long ardent lies did all but help those heat-struck.

Narrowed eyes did little to cool the unsettled mind.

Relief came at crisper times, still, wish them luck.

Don't stir! Lest they fry by the scorching and fury-blind.

"Have I thought of something?" He scoffed. "No, I'm stuck."

She'd help, but how? It was tough. "Just hold on...give it time."

The fire grew, and this time he burned, yelled "Fuck!" Her pleading fell deaf as anger ran amok.

She threw herself into the flames, partly shocked to find a warm glow. They gelled together, and he whispered to her, "You're mine."

"Only if you're here," delicate touch on his cheek. "I want you to stay."

Their colors shone around them after that, a perfect cover.

The unease dimmed, both more concerned instead with their graceful fall.

Would it hurt? Only if seen by others. Besides, they hover.

It's worth it, hiding side by side. That is when they most stand tall.

So she carried on, being carried off by her cherished lover.

He was carried away, her self never ceasing to enthrall.

"Promise not to fly away?" Cranberry eyes asked. "I want you to stay."

But then a chill crawled into one of their tender moments, biting.

"It's not what it looks like!" A shivering voice cried. "I would never!"

So, this was the cold truth, eh? Knots in throats, stomachs, hearts were tightening.

They slipped, were seen. He growled, saw that hated, frosty glare. "Whatever."

He stormed away, leaving her frigid. Back to that then? The fighting.

She sniffled from the harsh taunts, "I bet you thought you were so clever..."

Feeling, not thinking, she thought. But now they felt numb. "I wanted you to stay."

Yet two kindred spirits could not stray for too long.

The season of fog could not keep them apart.

It was clear to all, they were each other's birdsong.

A bitter wait that lasted until the New Year start.

"So, do you still want me to stay?"

"I think you know what I'm going to say."

He took her again and with a kiss, they smiled. "Happy Valentine's Day."
