It was a funny thought, that after all these years we were going to all be pulled back together. I couldn't tell you the last time I saw Dill or Phil. But, there I stood at the Pickles front door. My sister was going to marry my childhood friend. So, for the first time in six years I knocked on the door. "Chucky!" My mother squealed a she opened the door. "Kimi is going to be so happy to see you." She said as she let go. "But, why did you have to cut it so close. The day before, really." That was my mother for you. She is great at turning at happy moment into a guilt fest.
"I am here now isn't that all that matters." I said as she led me towards the kitchen. All the sudden it felt like the old days. Everyone was there. I looked around and took notice. Just like this town none of them changed.
"Hey Chuck." I heard Dill say as him and the guys walked my way. "You coming with us?" He asked.
"I am sure he is tried." Lil said as she wrapped her arms around him. "Do I get a goodbye kiss?" She asked.
"Anything for you babe." He said as he kissed her. When did that happen?
"We are going to Thirty's." Tommy said with a smile.
"I don't drink." I said as I looked at them.
"Ok then you stay with us." Lil said as she took my hand. "We are more fun anyways." She said with a smile. I sat down at the table and noticed that Kimi wasn't here.
"Where is Kimi?" I asked.
"She is upstairs. She didn't want to see him a day before." My mother explained.
"Okay." I said as I looked at the floor. This would have been more painless if I went and got wasted with the others.
"Is he gone?" Someone screamed from upstairs, but it wasn't Kimi.
"Yeah!" My mother screamed back as she walked into the living room. Everyone else followed her, so I followed him. I saw a stranger at the top of the stairs. She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen. She had a small figure and long black hair with a bit of pink. "Do we finally get to see the dress?" My mother asked.
"Come on down, Kimi!" The girl called as she walked down stairs. I saw my sister coming down the stairs in her wedding dress. I was happy for her, but I didn't care about the dress as much as the girls did.
"Oh, my baby!" My mother squealed. "Missy this is a beautiful dress how did you do it?"
"It wasn't hard. Kimi here is easy to please." She said. No wonder she is with Tommy. "I hand draped the satin and embellished the side with the flowers."
"She makes it sound like it was nothing." Kimi laughed. "She worked her ass off."
"It is what best friends do." Missy said as she looked at Kimi. "I wouldn't be a good bridesmaid if I didn't." I knew at that moment that I was falling for Missy. I spent the rest of the night thinking about her. Then I couldn't help but look at her when she appeared at my house the next morning. She had a blue dress on. Her hair was pulled up.
"Okay, people we have to go. My baby is ready to get married." My mother yelled as she ran down the stairs dressed in a long dress. "Stop ganking at the pretty girl and take your father to the church." She said as she tossed keys at me. I got to the church and I stood where I was told to stand. I watched my sister pledge her life to the guy she never liked. The whole time I was wondering what Missy's lips tasted like? It was later at the reception that I got the nerve to talk to her.
"Missy would you like to dance?" I asked her. She smiled at first.
"I thought you would never ask, Chucky." She said as she took my hand.
"Actually it is Charles." I said as I stared into her big brown eyes and we moved together.
"Melissa." She whispered. I knew at that moment that I would marry this beautiful girl someday. I leaned down to kiss her and was truly surprised that she didn't stop me. I found love where I least expected it. Home.
