"Those foolish boys!" he roared.
Frigga sat quietly in their room and watched her husband work himself into a frenzy, pacing around and yelling occasionally.
"What were they thinking? Thor I can understand. I could anticipate it to an extent. But Loki as well? They should know better. No good could come of this! He should have stopped his brother!"
She cut in, "He warned Heimdall and by extension, you. You know your sons. Once Thor has an idea in his head no one can stop him. Loki will follow him and try to protect him in his own way. There is no point in blaming him."
"How could they not appreciate the consequences of this? This is far worse than anything those boys have gotten into-"
Frigga snorted, "Even that time they got lost on Vanaheim?"
"-The peace with Jotunheim is gone! War is coming-"
Only great experience with her husband kept her from rolling her eyes, "That peace has hung by a thread for centuries. If not this, then something else would have happened."
As usual he ignored her.
"They must be punished. There is no use in trying to discipline Lady Sif or the Warriors Three. They follow Thor everywhere. They will only learn their lesson if Thor is the one who bears the brunt of this. Loki will remain here. He knows the severity of his actions. But Thor…"
Frigga watched carefully, knowing full well that her husband was a fine king, but his ability to separate that from fatherhood was a delicate balance that he still had not perfected.
"My love. Do not make this decision now. You are angry. You are thinking as a king, not as a father, and-"
His rage returned, "I am thinking as a king because the consequences of my sons' actions have far reaching implications that will affect all of Asgard. I cannot ignore this, Frigga. Thor willfully disobeyed my direct order. He led his brother and his friends to a hostile planet with the intention of questioning its king on a matter which we do not fully know the surrounding facts."
She persisted, "He acted as you taught him to, Odin. He is just like you were at that age, as you still are. The same headstrong, reckless behavior that you are criticizing him for, he learned at your knee. He is lucky to have a brother to guide him where you did not. You had to learn to temper your first inclination to destroy whatever was irking you. Thor has had Loki there to advise him. They will make a wonderful pair. You cannot separate that now, on the eve of another war with Jotunheim."
Her words, although rather circular, cut through Odin's anger and she watched him sag into his chair. She could see that he was already thinking everything over again, so she placed a gentle kiss at his temple and left him to his thoughts, knowing he would come to the right conclusion.
