Fitz and Simmons were in the lab, studing a serum that had been discovered - possibly alien, no one had any idea what it did. "You're the best." Coulson had said after setting it on the lab counter. "Figure it out."

So they were trying to - one slow test at a time. They'd found trace amounts of radiation, but not enough to have a significant impact, and Simmons was exhausted.

"Fitz, maybe we should give it a break for now."

"What, give up, just like that? Come on, Jemma, just quick -"

"I'm not suggesting we give up, Fitz, just take a break -"

" - There's still so many things left to try -"

"Fine!" Simmons said, exhasperated. "Fine, we'll keep going." She snatched the pen out of Fitz's hand and started writing furiously in the notebook. She was more than a little annoyed at Fitz, and it was nearly an hour before she spoke up.

"I'm going to bed." Simmons said, setting the pen down and resting her head in her hands for a brief moment. She was so exhausted she could barely keep her eyes open, and she had a wicked cramp in her right hand.

Fitz looked up, startled out of an almost trance-like concentration. "But we've still got so much -" He took a closer look at her and stopped. "Are you feeling alright, Jemma?"

"No, I'm not feeling bloody alright!" Simmons snapped, then instantly felt awful. "Sorry, Fitz." She said, rubbing her temples. "I'm just tired." Fitz nodded, but the hurt look didn't completely disappear.

Damn it, now Simmons was feeling completely awful. "I - I should probably just get to bed now." She said, turning to gather up her books. She turned around a little too quickly, and ran into Fitz. "Sorry," She muttered, steadying herself. She was suddenly aware of how close she was standing to Fitz - and, surprised, she realized she didnèt want to pull away. "I...um..." She stammered off.

"Yeah, you should..." Fitz mumbled, but he was staring at her with his big green eyes - god, had they always been that green? - and their faces were inches apart, and finally Simmons just gave in and kissed him.

She pulled away almost instantly, her face beet red. Oh god, had she really just done that? "I should go - I, um, I need to get sleep so we can go back to testing tomorrow, -" She blabbered, stepping around Fitz and keeping her eyes glued to the floor. This made her stumble into a stool, dropping all her books in a heap on the flor. "Oh, shit, I'll just get these and - and then I'll, ah, then -"

"Jemma - Jem!" Fitz said, grabbing her arm and turning her around to face him. He had this odd little smilme on his face - oh god, he was laughing at her - "listen to me." He said, a determined look on his face. Simmons took a deep breath and finally looked up to meet his gaze.

"What?" She responded miserably. But Fitz didn't say anything, because suddenly he was kissing her and she was kissing him and for the first time in her life Jemma Simmons stopped thinking.

"Goodnight." Fitz said when they pulled apart, looking astonished but inexplicably happy.

"Goodnight." Simmons breathed out.

It wasn't until hours later that she was finally able to sleep.
