The Plan

I look across the room at the lavender-haired girl and her boyfriend, a blonde boy with shining blue eyes. I wouldn't admit it to anyone, but I knew I was jealous that one of my best friends was with Yolei. I took a deep breath and made my way to them, but a brown-haired girl stepped in my way.

"Hey, Ken," she said.

"Uh, hi, Kari," I replied. A smile slowly, reluctantly, formed on my lips. I was in no real mood to smile.

Kari seemed slightly nervous about something. I would never have guessed that she would ask what she asked next. "Do you want to go out Saturday?"

Why was she asking me out? I thought...no, KNEW, that she liked TK. But then again, TK was no longer available. Did she know how I felt about Yolei? No. If she did, why ask me out? I opened my mouth and began to say, "But don't you like-"

"Don't YOU like Yolei?" she asked simply...though it sounded more like a statement than a question. There was a glimmer in her eyes I didn't rally trust. What did she have planned? "Do you want to hear out my idea?" Kari asked.

"You like TK," I repeated. "How is asking me out going to help you?"

"You like Yolei," she stated. "And I think she likes you." I was about to say something and deny that she liked me, but Kari cut me off once again. "If I take you off the available list, maybe Yolei would realize how she really feels."

I finally caught on. You'd think a genius like me would learn faster. "And that would leave TK available."

Kari nodded, smiling. "Now you've got the picture. So let's go."

"Huh?" Before I could even tell her whether or not I even agreed, she already dragged me off by the hand. 'Why do I get the feeling I'm going to regret this?' I thought to myself.

Nobody noticed that Kari and I came over holding hands and we didn't press them. But I could tell Davis, TK, and Yolei were shocked when we went our separate ways and Kari called out to me, "We're still up for Saturday, right, Ken?"

I had taken an acting course over the summer and managed to hide my surprise. I thought for sure that she'd given up when no one noticed our entwined hands. "Yeah, of course!" I called back.

I went to homeroom with Davis, smiling faintly to myself. But Davis clearly noticed and gave me a look that said we would talk.

"What's the big idea, Ken?" Davis asked. "Why'd you ask Kari out?"

I shook my head. We were walking to the usual lunch table our small group always claimed. "I didn't ask her. She asked me."

Davis' eyes grew. "What?! What about TK?!"

I couldn't help but smile. Davis was always trying to keep track of Kari's love life. He made fun of all her crushes just because he couldn't have her himself. But now it was just for sport. I don't think he really cares about her anymore. "I don't know." I didn't think it was wise to tell Davis about my plans with Kari, even if he was my best friend.

"Hey, congratulations," TK said, sitting down on the other side of me. "I didn't know you and Kari were dating."

'Me neither,' I thought to myself. It appeared as though Kari had already told them we had been going out for a while. Davis stared at me inquisitively, but didn't ask any questions. Yolei and Kari soon joined us. Yolei took the seat beside Takeru away from me and didn't speak. She only said a brief greeting. Kari managed to push Davis away so she could sit beside me.

"Hi, Ken," she said, her eyes smiling.

I smiled back. "Hi." Davis gave me another look. He planned on asking me more questions, and I knew what all of them would be. Now I just had to think up some answers.

AN: Hehe. It actually took me two months just to get this much down, so...don't expect the next chapter any time soon. I'm going to be concentrating more on my Escaflowne and Fushigi angsts. Or actually...just angsts in general. This romance is put on hold. Sorry!
