He replied in only a whisper.
"I love you, Winry."
The tiny girl of only five turned to look at her best friend, in the whole wide world and frowned, her blonde brows meeting as she did so.
"Really?" she asked softly. The crickets were chirping so wildly, and the soft breeze rustled the grass they lay in gazing at the stars, so they were sure that nobody else was listening in on their late night conversation. The little blonde boy blushed a little and bit his lip, throwing a glance at her on his right.
"Well… sure I do. If you know somebody since you were born, and always play with them, and eat meals with them, and hug them when they're sad, but never make 'em sad, and watch the stars with them and are always nice even after you're mad at each other-- that means you love them, doesn't it?" Edward asked curiously, his golden eyes watching Winry. She stuck her tongue out of her mouth and raised her hand towards the sky.
"I don't think that's right, Ed," she giggled softly and he blushed harder. She saw she'd upset him so she sat up straight and tackled him onto the grass in a bear hug. His shout of protest was muffled by her dungaree clad form as she hugged him tightly. "If you give somebody great big hugs, that means you love them too, right?"
Ed pondered her question and deemed it acceptable.
"Sure do, Winry," he told her, before slumping back down onto the grass a she rolled back to his side to continue gazing at the starry sky.
"'Kay. Thanks, Ed. For saying you love me and all. Should I say it back?" she questioned innocently. He thought it over before nodding is head.
"'S only fair."
Winry smiled and entwined her tiny hand with his own in the middle of the two of them, feeling the smooth texture of her own rub against the cuts and calluses he had on his palm.
She replied in only a whisper.
"I love you, Edward."
