"I don't know I don't know I don't know…" Jerrica said as she scrubbed her face with her hands.
It was supposed to be cleansing gesture, but all it accomplished was to rub off the last of the makeup she had robotically applied this morning. Her thoughts were racing, and she had spent too many late nights at the office to try and get some sleep now.
She scribbled out what she had on the yellow legal pad in front of her, ripped the page off and threw it on the floor. 'This is never going to work and I don't know why I listened to Kimber in the first place' she thought. Sighing, she reached for the desklamp to turn if off and pulled her hand back quickly.
"Son of a-!"
Looking at her hand, Jerrica saw a small trickle of blood where she had cut herself on the antique quill pen set left over from her father's reign at Starlight music.
"That's what you get for never wanting to get rid of any-"
She stopped as a drop of blood hit the top of her legal pad, and suddenly grabbed her pen. Aldevatio-onis.
"Do you even want to go there, seriously Shana?"
"Kimber, look- this may be exactly what she needs to snap her back to reality!"
"No! I think if we just give her a little more time-"
"Will both of you knock it off! Three years is plenty of time Kimber, Christ! What the hell are we going to do- sit here and bitch about it! Our sister is throwing the prime of her life and career away for what? To punish herself for something that was totally out of her control to begin with? A deception that we all knowingly participated in and encouraged? If we don't make the next move- who will?
Aja sighed. Kimber got up and refilled her cup of coffee, offering a refill to Shana; who smiled, but declined. The three of them sat at the round kitchenette table by the pool, trying to decide what action to take, if any, to help Jerrica pull herself out of the literal abyss she'd been in for the last three years. This ridiculous limbo wasn't doing them any good, both as a family and a band. Something had to be done. Tonight.
3 years prior…
The stage was set, and the sound and light boards ready to go. As they waited backstage, Jem stuck her head out to see if Rio had given them the thumbs up. Just then he did. It was all go.
They stepped out on stage as the pre-generated fog swirled and the lights began to brighten from their dim. Kimber struck the opening cord of "Deception" and they started to play. When Jem hit her first note, Aja turned her head slightly and gasped.
She was standing next to none other than Jerrica Benton. Silence. The sound of Shana's drumsticks hitting the stage seemed to echo through the amphitheater. She whipped her head around from Jerrica's dumbstruck expression to see Rio was gone. Jerrica bolted, instruments hit the stage- and it seemed like suddenly the sky had fallen.
