How I Joined Marching Band
Authors Note: OK, this is my first Marching Band story. I hope you like it. I'm sorry about the lack of dialogue, all of this happened over a year ago, and I don't remember all of the details. …So why are marching band stories fanfiction? I always thought that fanfiction is something that you could get sued for if you don't have a disclaimer. It seems kind of silly to write a disclaimer for this. It's like: I do not own marching band. (duh!) So henyway (this is one of the weird things I say a lot. It's like saying "anyway" except the first syllable is kind of a sigh.) on to the story!
I remember towards the end of my 8th grade year, my friends and I were talking about what activities we were going to do in high school. My friends said that they were doing marching band, and asked me if I wanted to do it too. One of my friends, Caitlin, told me that the only thing it conflicted with was volleyball. Unfortunately, I'd wanted to try out for volleyball so I decided not to do it.
Months passed. Soon the first day of volleyball tryouts came, the second to last Saturday of the summer. After one minor incident (I was told to go to tryouts at the wrong time) I arrived at volleyball tryouts. In the entire gym there were 30 or 40 kids, all who were going to be freshmen or sophomores. I didn't know a single person in the room. OK let me rephrase that, I wasn't on friendly terms with anyone in the room. There were some people who I recognized from my temple, from around town, from elementary school, but no one I was friends with.
Of course, this wasn't unexpected. When you go to a private Jewish school instead of the town school, you're not going to know a lot of people your age. But still, it wasn't reassuring.
The tryout wasn't particularly exciting. Whenever we did a partner exercise, I had to be with whoever else didn't have one. After the tryout I went home.
The next day of tryouts was a Monday. I didn't have to be at tryouts until four, so I slept in that morning. At around 9am my mom called me from her cell phone on her way to work. She told me that band camp was today and that I should go. I told her that I didn't want to. (I was afraid that I wouldn't know anyone except my two friends. I was also worried about getting into one of those situations where it's like, 'hey, who are you? Your name isn't on the list,' because I didn't sign up.) Upon further questioning I told my mom that I didn't think it was ok for me to go because I never signed up. Mom told me that she was sure it was fine, but I still wasn't comfortable just showing up. Mom and I hung up.
Soon she called me back, saying that she had just spoken with the drum captain, who had said "just have her show up we would love her to come". So I went to band camp.
This first day of band camp was run by the students, who all were nice and friendly. After doing the usual go around in a circle and say your name (and instrument and grade/years of marching band) we split into sections and worked on marching until it was time for band camp to end. The people were so nice. Everyone was happy, and accepting. I felt like even though I didn't know very many people, these were the ones I could make friends with. After band camp I went to the second day of volleyball tryouts. That night the first round of cuts happened. I went to the school to find out whether I had made the team. I wasn't all that disappointed to find out I didn't make it. Because by the end of that first day, I knew marching band was where I belonged.
So… I hope you liked it. Fanfiction should make a shirt. On the front it should say: "Will Work For Reviews" and on the back it should say: read and review! Please.
