Alexander could hardly contain himself. Today was Hephaestion's birthday and he was throwing him a big party, much to Hephaestion's chagrin. The party was going to be fun but the gift he was giving him was what was exciting him.
He really had two gifts; one was the party and one for private. The private one was an exquisite gem of sapphire, the color of which matched Hephaestion's eyes, especially when he was angry. Hephaestion loved colored stones and had quite a collection already.
It was the party gift that had Alexander so excited. He felt a tinge of guilt for it but not enough to not give it. He had ordered it made, an exact replica of the one Hephaestion already owned, or owned him would be closer to the truth.
And the truth was that Hephaestion loathed the little stool that sat in the corner of his room. He tried to get rid of it, leaving it outside his room, throwing it out the window, but it always seemed to return. It might be a little worse for wear and a little patched up, but it always returned. It had developed a life all it's own.
It was going to be so much fun to see the look on Hephaestion's face when he saw the second stool, a perfect little match for a perfect set.
The party began with wine and all of Hephaestion's favorite foods. Alexander had him seated beside him in front of the room where all could see him.
Soon it was time for the gifts. Hephaestion shifted in his seat uncomfortable when a table of them appeared. From the looks on a lot of the faces in the room, he knew this was not going to be fun. He knew these people too well for it to be otherwise.
There was a scattering of nice presents among the majority of gag gifts, which surprised Hephaestion. With only one left, he nervously glanced Alexander's way.
"I tried to think of the perfect gift for you this year, something I knew you could use and appreciate."
Hephaestion thought maybe this wasn't going to be as bad as he thought. And then he saw someone carry out something covered with a blanket.
The blanket was removed, Hephaestion smiled but his eyes were the color of the gem yet to be given when he looked at Alexander. Alexander noticeably shivered.
The party ended later, Hephaestion went to his room taking all the gifts, except the stool. Alexander followed nervously; Hephaestion hadn't said a word to him since he saw the offensive gift.
Alexander carried the stool in front of him. He didn't knock but went through the door and tripped unceremoniously over the original stool located on purpose right in his path.
Rubbing with his shin and nose, he sheepishly looked towards Hephaestion, whose eyes were still that angry blue.
He held out the other present, which by now had became a peace offering, hoping for the best.
