The Version of Us That Works

They fell in love in secret, knowing it would never last. He was a Slytherin, she was a Gryffindor, he was a pure-blood and she was a muggle-born. Perhaps in another lifetime, they always thought. She'd ended it on a March evening, up on the ledge in the astronomy tower coincidently where he'd told her he loved her only a year before. On this particular night, they'd fought again, mainly about his family and her friends, this fight ended with him resulting to calling her a mudblood and her demanding to see his arm. After shouted words, he had pulled up his sleeve, it was there everything she had feared, black against his pale skin. "I'm done" was the last word she exchanged with him. This was not the last she saw of him of course, they had lessons together, he'd watched as his aunt tortured her, she'd helped save him in the room of requirement and she'd watched as he walked from the group of students, teachers and order members to his beckoning parents. That was the last time she'd seen him.

It wasn't until 19 years later that they saw each other again. Both at the concealed platform at Kings Cross Station to drop their children off, before they began their first year. They then saw each other's significant other. His only child with his signature blonde locks, almost a spitting image of him. Her with her two children with their red hair. The girl looked like her mother and the boy like his father. They both tried to avoid eye contact. Of course they both knew the other was happy, yet they both had a void where each other should be. After their encounter at the platform, they rarely thought of each other. Until they both received a letter from their children. This letter had explained that their children had become friends. They were both happy about this friendship, her husband was less than happy about this friendship but lightened up when he heard that their daughter had exceeded his son in academics.

For the next four years they only saw each other on platform days. They each would be surprised when they saw each others children, his son looked more like him every time, her daughter looked more like her too, just with her husbands hair.

During their children's 5th year, they received another letter that brought their minds to each other. Unlike the letter they had received in the first year, this letter had informed them their children had begun to see each other. Her husband wanted to kill the boy, she calmed him down. She then sat down and wrote to him. She explained that they probably have him, his wife and his son over for dinner during the holidays. This offer he accepted, he wanted to speak to her again. 2 days after the children returned home, he arrived at her house. She opened the door.

"Draco" She said with a smile "and you must be Astoria, you do look very different from your sister and finally you must be young Scorpius"

"It's nice to meet you Mrs Weasely" Hermione smiled at the boys manners.

"Come on in, please call me Hermione, Mrs Weasely is my mother-in-law" She turned around to face the stairs "Rose, darling the Malfoy's are here"

They sat and talked like all those years hadn't gone by, Draco offered to help with the kitchen. While he was stood talking to Hermione, they both turned to see their children sat in lounge, cuddling on a sofa.

"You know Hermione" Hermione turned to look at him "They're the version of us that works"

"Now that I agree with" She turned back to the sink and the dirty dishes.
