I've decided to rewrite/edit most if not all of my chapters. Not much will be changed but some things in this story bother me. Nevertheless , please enjoy and continue reading my works.
Yui Komori woke up drenched in sweat, her eyes wide with fear. Her heart fluttered in her chest while she clutched the silken bedsheets in her hand. The nightmare that taunted her out of sleep was long gone, leaving nothing but a daunting feeling behind. Sighing, she got herself out of bed as sleep was not going to bless her anytime soon.
Nights like this weren't uncommon, more of a regular occurrence much to her dismay. Yui turned for her door and left the room for a stroll. It was silent in the corridor, not even Laito had come to torment her. With no destination in mind, she began to explore the mansion. The pads of her feet lightly grazed the floor as she mindlessly walked, lured by an unknown force. In a daze she trekked on through the mansion until she finally became aware of her surroundings. She had ended up in an unknown, worn down hallway.
"Why did I…?" Her voice trailed off as a her ears perked at a new sound. It was singing, a voice both soft and surreal quietly echoing throughout the area. Yui sought after this melody and came upon a shabby wooden door. She stood silently just outside of it to listen.
"Hing hang hung, see what the hangman's done… Hung hang hing, oh see that robber swing… Gold and gems make the people scream, hooray, hooray… Oh see that robber sway…" The voice stilled before continuing at an almost mournful tone, "Hing hang hung, hing hang hung... that's what the hangman sung."
Yui stood frozen, her hand resting just above the door knob. Her eyes were wide and shining in the darkness.
"I know you're there, I can smell you. Please do enter." The voice called from within the room, slightly muffled from the door between them.
Yui hesitated but slowly opened the door to an extremely dark room with no windows. Her eyes adjusted to the darkness and she noticed a small form seated on the ground.
"Um, sorry for eavesdropping." Yui apologized, her immediate go-to response. Not knowing who exactly resided in the room made her all the more conscious of what she said.
The form chuckled, it sounded young and feminine. "It's fine really, even though you're actually the first to hear me…"
Yui squinted but she couldn't make out any details about the person in front of her. It was as if the shadows themselves were purposely keeping her hidden.
"It's rather dark in here, wouldn't you prefer some light?" Yui shifted around trying not to move, afraid of hitting something.
"Light? I had forgotten most cannot see in the dark" It mused, as if the thought never occurred to them. Before Yui had the chance to respond she heard a metallic click and then light began to show from the ceiling but it wasn't from any ordinary light. When she looked up, it was as if gazing into the starry night sky. Tiny lights dotted the ceiling, all together forming a constellation. Remembering she wasn't alone, Yui turned her attention back to the form on the floor.
Sitting there was a hooded figure, a cape was covering most if not all of the body. It looked up and Yui could make out bright blue eyes from under the hood and wisps of pale blonde hair tumbling onto its shoulders.. It shifted and it's hood fell back revealing a young girl with pale blonde hair.
However it wasn't this adorable sight that caught Yui by surprise but the white-pale blonde wolf ears that rested on the girl's head, flicking at unheard sounds. The girl locked eyes with Yui and her ears flicked again.
"Astounding… " Yui whispered out loud, unaware herself until the girl started to laugh.
"Wait what? I can't believe I just said that I'm so sorry" Yui actually looked startled which made the other girl's laughter continue on. The room was filled with her giggling, very closely resembly tinkling bells in the wind.
"No, no. It's just… I wouldn't think that would be your first reaction to me, that's all." The girl blushed and wiped a tear that had formed at the edge of her eye.
"I'm sorry." Yui apologized again. The girl shook her head and lifted herself off of the floor while keeping her black velvet cape still wrapped around her body.
"I'm Ren, it's nice to meet you." She bowed slightly. Yui took a moment before she too bowed back and responded, "Yui…"
Ren straightened, her eyes level with Yui's chest and her ears just reaching Yui's nose. Comparing the two side by side, one could mistake Ren for being the younger sister of Yui.
"Do you like them? The stars that is." Ren pointed up at the star riddled ceiling. Each star shined brightly, a contrast to the midnight blue sky that housed them.
"They're beautiful, but how did you do that?" Yui questioned. Ren lifted her hands to the ceiling, splaying out her individual fingers.
"It's a contraption that allows me to see the night and the day. The moon and the sun. Dawn and dusk. It is my world. … A gift from my master..." The last part was barely whispered so it went unheard by the older girl.
"Your world?" Yui turned and finally noticed what was actually in the room. A heap of blankets sat in one corner and a small table near off. Other than that it was an empty room with a ceiling of the sky. "You live here." Yui realized.
"I think." Ren suddenly gripped her cloak tighter, her fingers turning white. "I don't really remember. Do I live here or … I'm not really sure." She started to mumble until Yui walked over to her and lightly touched her on the shoulder. She appeared spooked by the sudden action.
"Thank you. I haven't been in the company of others so I'm unsure of how to act properly. I can sense that you may want to leave this place." Ren slouched and once again looked distant.
Yui went to pat the girls head, "No, of course not! I'd would much rather stay and enjoy your company… if you would like." Ren closed her eyes and leaned into Yui's touch, her ears brushing lightly against the girl's hand.
"You can touch them, just be gentle please." She encouraged Yui with a quiet voice.
So Yui went forth and felt the girl's wolf ears. They were soft to the touch and got even fuzzier on the inside. Her fingertips grazed the base and traveled up, the fur held no resistance at all and was addicting, if anything, to touch.
"You are truly kind, Yui. I cannot recall the last time I welcomed another's warmth." Ren nuzzled the girl's chest and held close. Yui let her and even wrapped her own arms around the wolf girl. God's intentions are clear to me now. I will become her light and guide her down the chosen path.
"Up so early bitch-chan. Why oh why would you be wandering around at this hour?" Laito's voice rang outside in the hallway. Yui gasped and felt the disappearance of Ren as a flurry of fur and hair passed in front of her.
She blinked and stood alone in the room. Ren… I will protect your secret with my life. She swore and gathered her wits, rushing from the now empty room. She shut the door and headed off down the hallway, Laito's voice closing in.
"Thank you " Yui thought she heard Ren's voice but chose not to risk answering. Instead she saw Laito smiling devilishly at her.
"Good morning Bitch-chan, it's rude to leave before I had the chance to wake you up myself."
