Goodbye.
Remus had never before realized just how hard it was to say. But he had to.
Dora, his beautiful Dora, lay fast asleep, oblivious to what was happening as she dreamt. He hated doing this to her. Knowing he was hurting her. Again. He hated having to leave in the middle of the night, fleeing like the coward he was. He knew she wouldn't understand. She never had fully understood what he went through, how it had changed him. The way he thought.
He ran his hand over her slightly raised stomach for the last time. She didn't deserve this. To have this thing inside her. No one did.
He ran his hand up her body, knowing he was only making this harder on himself. But he wanted to remember. He rested his hand on her cheek. Gently, he kissed her.
He pulled away, quicker than he would have liked, feeling her sweet breath on his face. she would be right to hate him after this. She should hate him anyway, along with the rest of the world.
"Goodbye." He whispered softly.
Then he picked up his bag, and ran into the night, as if the very hounds of hell were on his heels. Within seconds, he had vanished into the darkness.
Tonks woke up. The house was empty.
So was her heart.
