The woven basket pulled heavily on Fiona's gloved hands. She swallowed, her skin growing clammy and tingly inside the gloves. Outwardly, she did her best to look brave, or at least unaffected by the thought of going into the woods on her own.
Despite her hands shaking, her mother carefully managed to empty the last of the rolls into the basket. "Now, be careful not to spill them, Fiona."
Fiona nodded.
Her mother sighed and brushed a strand of hair back behind her ear. "I… I would do it myself, but…"
"I know, Mother." Fiona embraced her. "You're ill; you should stay home. Besides, I know the way to Grandmother's by heart. It's not too far."
"But it's so cold out… Your cape won't be enough. At least take a scarf."
"No, scarves feel too tight around my neck, and I have my hood," Fiona refused. "It's just a short ways, I'll be back before you know it."
"All… All right, then." Her mother sat back weakly on the kitchen chair. "Please be careful, Fiona… Take only the main road, do not approach strangers, and above all…"
Fiona gulped. The part I fear most of any walk…
"Beware of the wolves."
