Phil hated rain. Buckets of it were currently pouring down onto his face, making him feel more than slightly pissed off. It was getting dark, and he decided to take a short cut home through a forest, recommended to him by a friend. If he was late, it didn't really matter considering that he lived on his own. At least it couldn't get worse than feeling like he was submersed in a floating swimming pool. Or so he thought.

The short cut his friend had told him to take involved lots of sharp twists and turns, and before long, Phil found himself completely, hopelessly lost. Which was absolutely wonderful, and not terrifying at all.

Stumbling over tree roots, he ended up simply circling a huge tree, with branches sticking out in every possible direction, including upwards. Phil swallowed, looking upwards and flinching as more rain fell down on him. He had two options; he could go back the way he came, or he could scale the tree in front of him to look for a way out of the forest. He chose the second option. Of course. The tree branches were increasingly slippery as he climbed, and he nearly fell several times. When he got to the top, he squinted out into the apparently endless forest, having to bite back a scream. Trees spanned as far as he could see, and even further, making escape impossible.

A metallic beeping noise was coming from beside him, and he saw a plastic contraption nestled into a thick clump of leaves. Curiosity getting the better of him, he reached out and grabbed it, letting it rest in his palm.

It was small and spherical, with a large red button on the top, labelled 'return'. Phil was unsure of what it meant, so decided not to press it. He put the ball in his soaking wet coat pocket, heedless of the more urgent beeping coming from it. If it didn't stop soon, he was going to press the button to see if it stopped.

Phil slowly clambered down from the tree, more steady on his feet than before. The rain seemed to be clearing, which was a good thing, although the beeping was getting even louder and faster. He screwed up his face, pulling the thing out of his pocket. A red light was coming out of the top of it, and without thinking, he instantly slammed his hand down on top of the button.

That turned out to be one of the best but worst decisions he ever made.
