Wasn't A Stranger

(Based on Emergency! Episode 3x1 'Frequency')

By, Donna M. Monnig (ShadowRhymer)

It wasn't a stranger whose pulse I took,

It wasn't a stranger that's why I shook.

Inside of me my heart turned cold,

As I watched events unfold.

Before me lay a very close friend,

I knew I was watching his life come to an end.

I railed against deaths fearsome maw,

Trying to save Drew from it's claw.

I wiped the blood from off his face,

And wished for a moment I could take his place.

For he had a wife, a family, waiting for him,

If he died who would take care of them?

Everything in my power I tried to do,

But it wasn't enough to save my friend Drew.

He died on the table, Brackett couldn't stop the bleed,

Don't let it be true, to God I plead.

But it was too late the truth to ignore,

As the realization hit me straight to the core.

My feet felt like lead as I walked to the waiting room,

Seeing Pam sitting there, I felt like the bringer of doom.

Our eyes met and there were no words to be said,

She saw in my face that her husband was dead.

She said it'd been months since they'd seen me around,

In a sea of regret I felt I would drown.

Why hadn't I stopped by more recent than then?

Now I would never have that chance again.

I helped plan the funeral, my chest was so tight,

And Drew's face haunted my dreams at night.

It was all just so senseless the way my friend died,

And I can't help but wonder what else I could've tried.

There's nothing I can do, there's nothing to say,

But a part of my soul died on that tragic day.
