A/N: I am not against happy endings in ANY way! I thought it'd be interesting to take a darker turn with some of my favorite Disney films, mostly Disney princess films. How would some of our leading ladies (or men) react to an unhappy ending? Happy endings are AWESOME! But, sad ones can be interesting when you have imagination.
"No! No! No!" Gothel shrieked, as she pulled her cloak over her aging face.
Eugene had cut her only source of life, and all her years were coming back to her. Rapunzel watched in horror, as the only mother she ever knew was dying.
Pascal grabbed a handful of Rapunzel's cut hair and stretched it out to cause Gothel to lose her footing. She screamed as she fell out of the tower. Rapunzel held out her arms, wishing there could have been another way. But, she knew there wasn't. This woman had lied to her.
Rapunzel breathed heavily. Her green eyes filled with shock. Then, she gasped.
Eugene!
She turned and held his head in her hands. He was turning pale and his wound, where Gothel stabbed him, had gotten worse.
"No, no, no, no, no. Eugene...?"
He coughed and slightly opened his eyes.
"No...," she groaned. "Look at me. Look at me. I'm right here. Stay with me, Eugene!"
She grabbed his shackled hand and put it on her brown head in frustration and sadness, trying to heal him.
"Flower, gleam and glow...let your...power shine!" she sang, between sobs.
"Hey...hey..." Eugene said, weakly.
She continued. "Make the clock reverse. Bring back what once was mine..!"
"Rapunzel.." he said.
She sighed in sadness and gave in. "What?"
Even though, she knew he had done it to save her, she couldn't help but hate him for a moment. How could he have done this to himself?
"You were my new dream.." he whispered, hoarsely.
Rapunzel let out a short happy sob, and it quickly went away.
"And, you were mine."
He closed his eyes and gave her a small grin. Then, his face turned paler and his smile vanished. He let out his last breath and slumped lifelessly into her arms. He was gone.
Rapunzel shook her head as tears flooded her eyes. Her dream. Her love. He was gone forever. She cupped the side of his face with her hand and sang quietly to herself.
"Heal what has been hurt..."
"I've been looking out a window for 18 years.."
"Change the fates' design.."
"..dreaming of what it might be like when those lantersn take to the sky."
"Save what has been lost.."
"What if it's not everything I dreamed it would be."
"..bring back what once was mine."
"It will be."
"What once was mine."
Rapunzel burst into sobs and hugged Eugene body. Tears streamed down her cheeks and she didn't hold them back or wipe them away. The silence of the tower was interrupted by her sobs. Then, her grief turned to anger. Not towards Gothel or Eugene, but to herself.
She got up and put her hands on her head, grabbing her hair. Then, she pulled at it, causing pain but also relief.
Why was I born with this curse? SOMEBODY TELL ME, WHY?!
Then, she found herself screaming Eugene's name several times outloud.
He was mine. He once was mine.
