A long while ago, in a rare quiet moment, the Winchesters, father and son, had sat in amicable silence, nursing chilled beers after a hard job – a poltergeist, he thought, remembering.
Are you happy, Dean? Dad had asked, out of the blue.
He'd looked at his father as if he'd grown two heads, uncomprehending.
Happy. What did that even mean?
He did what he did and he shut up about it. His life was hunting. Hunting - was - what it was, that's all.
So he'd grinned; wicked and wide, fine and free, and nodded.
Sure – he was happy as hell.
