SURRENDER

It was just a flower.

One small, stupid flower.

It shouldn't mean anything. It shouldn't make her heart race. It shouldn't make her smile like a fool. It certainly shouldn't make butterflies appear in her stomach. It was a dead plant for crying out loud! It wasn't that important!

Except…

Except that she didn't get flowers. Ever. From anyone.

Except that this one had been attached to her locker, out in the open, for everyone to see.

Except that it was her favorite flower in her favorite color and she could name on one hand the people that knew either of those things about her.

Except that it came with a note.

Love me back.

Such a simple message to have such an impact on her.

It made her giddy and frightened all at once.

Her hands were shaking. Her mind was racing. Her heart was pounding.

She didn't know what to do.

A flower shouldn't have the power to change her life, it just shouldn't.

But she somehow felt that she was standing on the edge of something that could be the start of the best thing to ever happen to her and the one thing that could utterly destroy her. And it was stupid because it's just one little flower with an even littler note and it had her quaking in her boots. Ridiculous.

And yet, she couldn't just throw the flower away.

Love me back.

Love.

It was something she yearned for, like so many. Something she'd been denied for so long. Something she wanted with everything she had. And here before her was the evidence that someone did love her. That someone cared about her and wanted her. That someone would go to the trouble of finding out her favorite flower, her favorite color, which locker was hers and when to leave this message so she'd be sure to get it. That's a lot of effort someone was putting into her and not something that could be easily discounted.

But it was still just a flower, with a note signed by an anonymous 'R'. She didn't know this person or why this person would want her when no one else seemed to but…

Love me back.

She wanted to. Oh, how she wanted to. Her heart ached, squeezing painfully in her chest, as the swell of desperate desire swept through her.

She closed her eyes, needing to hold back sudden tears.

She nearly laughed, that a gesture so small could break her so easily.

Love me back.

The words ran through her head, through her body, over and over and over again until they filled her up and strained against her skin wanting to break out.

Love me back.

She would.

Perhaps she already did.

"Love me back, Beth."

Clouded blue eyes opened and met warm brown ones looking back.

She sucked in a breath, filling lungs she hadn't known had been starving.

She blew out her answer in a whisper.

A surrender.

"Yes, Rosa."

THE END
