Title: The Shadow Left Behind

Author: Scarred

Disclaimer: I own nothing. Wouldn't ever claim to.

Summery: When Buffy died a part of her was left behind. A short conversation between Dawn and Spike.

A/N: This takes place during the summer after Buffy's death. Just a short conversation I thought up. Hope you enjoy.

"Do you still love her?" I ask.

"Your sister was an amazing person. One of the strongest ladies I've ever met," he says quietly. Almost mournfully. If that was even possible.

"Do you love her more than me?" I press, not only seeing, but feeling the darkness begin to consume my little room with it's rosy pink walls.

I can't see past my white flowered bedspread to where I know he's sitting on the floor.

A moment of silence follows where all I can hear is the steady sound of my own breathing.

"It's just a question..." I trail off, feeling disappointed. Disappointed that he hadn't immediately picked me. That he would never be able pick me.

"Dawnie," he sounds so tired, "you're the one who's here."

"But if we could change places... Would you want us to? If it meant you could have her back?" I can't help but go on.

He sighs. I know that these are the types of questions that he hates answering, but I have to know. Even if it hurts.

"Niblet you know things don't work like that." He still sounds tired.

"Besides," he begins again, quieter this time, "I never had her to begin with."

He always was good at avoiding the issue.

I sighed and pulled my legs up to my chest. Even with Buffy gone I would always be living in her shadow. The less important sister. The one who wasn't even real. A fake. A poorly made copy. Not able to live up to the original.

"I... I've never felt like this before Bit. I've never felt for anyone like I feel for you," he pauses, "And as much as I miss Buffy I would never wish you dead. Ever."

I crawl down to the floor and sit next to him.

"Spike," I whisper hoarsely, "I love you."

"I know Niblet. I know."

He puts his arm around me and we are silent.
