The moonlight glittered overhead onto the cradle. A stray breeze flitted around the crowd as they strained to see the new child. Slowly rocking the cradle was Diaval. He gazed down onto the slumbering babe in wonder, not believing this gift was his. Maleficent sat next to him her head resting on his shoulder, her eyes drooping closed from exhaustion. Almost nineteen hours of labor had taken its toll on her.

The babe cried out, his eyes squeezed shut has he wailed while his face turned red. Diaval hurried to grab the child, maneuvering around the black wings to hold his baby close. Maleficent drowsily raised her head to brush the black mop of hair out of the silver eyes of her new baby. His small horns brushed against her palm as he twisted his head into her touch. His crying had ceased for the moment as he reveled in his mother's touch.

"What is the child's name?" One of the pixies called out. Maleficent sighed and looked up from the babe. She and Diaval had argued about this almost from the moment they learned she was pregnant. It wasn't until two days earlier that they had agreed on the name. "Would you like to do the honors, dear?" Maleficent asked Diaval, too tired to stand up and introduce the baby to the Moors. "I would love too." Diaval stood with the baby in his arms.

"Listen well, you all!" Diaval called out. The crowd quieted as they waited for the name. "From here on till forever the name of this young faerie boy will be known as is Carnion! Let it be known!" He lifted Carnion above his head. The babe lifted his head, opened his eyes, and stretched his wings to their full length letting out a cry of protest.

The crowd erupted into noise, clapping and cheering for the new life. Maleficent smiled, she knew that no matter what her son would be loved by the people and nothing would change that.
