April sat in the passenger seat chewing nervously on her thumbnail. Michael and Kitt had just picked her up, answering a desperate call for a ride to the Children's Hospital.
They had known this was a possibility, more of a probability if they allowed themselves blunt honesty. But, the call from her sister had still been a shock. That Becky had collapsed in school and was fading fast terrified her.
April looked out the rain splattered side window. The windscreen was sheeted with water. Even with Kitt's wipers at the max, they couldn't hold back the deluge.
The weather was fitting - dark, dreary, almost scary at times. Still, even in their rush with the nasty weather conditions, Michael's driving was the furthest thing from her mind.
Becky would be okay. With all the people around her that care, that were willing to be tested, to donate if need be - herself and the man sitting beside her included, and still needing to be tested.
The sudden bang over her head startled her, it was shortly accompanied by a great many other loud clatters as the white balls of ice bounced off the car.
"Oh dear," Kitt commented, somewhat needlessly as the hail continued to pound his skin.
While most people were pulling off to the side, visibility and damage to their vehicles a great concern to them, Michael and Kitt pushed on as quickly as they dared considering the now ice and water covered road. There was a young life hanging in the balance, one that could end at a moment's notice if they couldn't find a bone marrow match.
The thought of it was as if the hail was physically hitting her. Her breath caught, her heart seized. It was a possibility - that Becky could die a slow, horrible death as they watched. It was just so unfair that a little girl, so full of life should experience her own mortality at such a young age.
A warm hand covered her wrist. Startled, April looked over to meet soft, worried blue eyes straight on. His touch comforted her somewhat. To know that she wasn't the only one scared - terrified of the situation. She turned her hand to take his, hoping she was returning the comforting gesture.
She smiled, the first one since her sister had called. Michael had that determined look in his eyes, one that told her exactly the lengths he'd be willing to go to save Becky's life. Nothing would happen to her niece - not if there was a chance in Hell Michael and Kitt could prevent it.
