Adam takes a breath and looks from their interlocked hands up to meet his eyes. "I can't do this anymore" He whispers as a breath of relief escapes his lips. Kurt stares at Adam as water builds in his eyes and a sad knowing smile replaces the frown on his face. Slowly he raises and lowers his head and says "I know". He takes a deep breath and continues "I'm sorry, I really wanted to be over him. You are a great guy and I really like you. But, I love him and I hate myself for it." A small hiccup escapes his lips as the tears began to fall.
Adam quickly tightens his grip on their joined hands and pulls Kurt slightly closer. "I know" he says. "You told me that you weren't over him and I should've listened. I just….just wanted this to work. I hoped it would and I was blind to the reality of what was happening." He takes a deep breath and releases Kurt's hands while he takes a step back. Kurt's face shows him the sadness of the sudden loss but the overall relief that the lie is over. This stabs Adam's heart ever so slightly, he knows this was coming and he was the fool to believe it wasn't there. Dropping his gaze to the floor he continues "When I saw you with him tonight….I…just knew that what we had wasn't real. I thought you were giving me you. With your laugh, hugs, smiles…I thought I had you. But, seeing you with him, I see that I never came close." Now that he has said his fear out loud he regains the strength to raise his eye to meet Kurt once more. "Kurt, Blaine may have hurt you but I see that you and him will always be. I see two soul mates finding each other again. You smile at him like he is your world, like you are finally living, and he looks at you the same way. So….I need to bow out. I realized that this is it for you. That I can no longer be selfish with you and stand in your way."
Adam gives Kurt a slow smile while Kurt nods and the tears keep falling. Slowly turning around Adam takes this moment to walk out of the studio. Not too fast….just a normal pace. Until Kurt is out of his sight and then he breaks out in a run to get as far away before the tears start to fall.
Kurt watches Adam leave and hears the footsteps quicken as soon as he is out of sight. His heart hurts but this time it doesn't feel broken. It feels free. As he turns he catches his image in the mirror and slowly steps up to meet his reflection. Taking the look in, he's surprised that he sees a man now, not a boy that he once was. Wiping his eyes he takes a deep breath to get himself under control. The tears that fell for the realization that his love for Blaine has never changed, are now dry and the red cheeks slowly return to normal. He stands up straight and squares his shoulders. Deciding now is the time, he quickly turns around and runs out of the room. For the first time in his life he isn't running from something, he is running to something. To his happily ever after. To his Blaine.
