"She's beautiful, Toph.", said the waterbender as she handed the baby girl into the new mother's arms.

"Of course she is. Just what you would expect of my kid. Lin here is the daughter of the World's Greatest Earthbender, so she's already infinitely better than every other baby, and when she's a little older I'll teach how to be a great bender just like her mom.", replied Toph, her usual cockiness still there even after hours of labor. She adjusted her arms slightly trying to position the baby girl into a proper hold like Katara had taught her over the last few months, with a content smile resting on her lips.

"I'll go tell the gang that everything's fine and let you two have some alone time.", said the healer as she walked towards the door. "Just call if you need anything."

"Tch, I've got this, Katara. You've done this three times already so it can't be that hard." shot back the earthbender with a smirk.

"Would it kill you to not sass me every time I open my mouth.", huffed Katara.

"Oh, does my sass bother you, Sugar Queen?"

"Yes, just like that nickname does."

"Then no."

"Fine, I'm leaving. I'll bring everyone back here in an hour or so to meet the newest member of Team Avatar.", said the waterbender before exiting the room. I'm sure she'll be just as stubborn and irritating as Toph when she grows up., the waterbender. Just what are group needs.

Toph waited until she could feel Katara approach the group of their waiting friends outside the building before feeling comfortable enough to speak aloud. "I guess it's just you and me now, kid.", said the police chief hesitantly. She heard the baby gurgle slightly at the sound of her voice as she wiggled closer against her chest. She stared down at the tiny girl in her arms, tears filling her eyes as the realism of the situation hit her. "We might as well get this out of the way now, so that it's not a big deal later in your life, but I'm blind.", said the woman. "I can't see you like you'll be able to see me once you open your eyes."

She's beautiful, Toph.

"Katara said you were beautiful, but I don't really know what that means. Beauty, colors, those things have always just been words to me since I can't see things like that with my bending like I can shapes, but I've never really felt they were all that special. Being blind's never felt like a handicap to me, I'm still me, I'm still Toph Bei Fong whether I see things with my eyes or with my earthbending.", said Toph seriously.

"But now, even if it were just for an instant, I'd like to see your face, Lin, because I know that nothing else in this world could compare to you.", whispered the earthbender as a tear slipped down her cheek. She let it drip down her face as her hand came up to rest against her daughter's tiny head. "I know that when you're older you probably won't think it's fair that I can't look at you or tell you how pretty you are like Katara and other women can with their daughters, but I promise I'll always love you. I'll make sure you're strong, so that you can make your own decisions in life, and I won't force anything on you like my parents did. I'll protect you and make sure you have a place to come home to where you feel safe."

Lin gurgled again, her tiny hands reaching up to touch the earthbender's much larger one that was cradling her.

"You're my daughter...I'm your Mom, so I'll do everything I can to take care of you.", said Toph. She leaned her face down then, pressing a kiss to the baby girl's soft forehead before she continued speaking. "I don't know you yet, but I love you, Lin."
