One bright and beautiful day on Sodor, the two engines James and Percy were playing Truck-Scotch in the Wellsworth Shunting Yard when Edward the Blue Engine, their older brother, came over to see what they were doing.
"Hello there, you two!" He greeted his younger brothers. "Playing your game again, I see."
"Yes, we are!" James said proudly.
"Is alright if I join you both?" Edward asked with an embarrassed smile. "I've no jobs to do, you see."
"Alright then, you can." James conceded.
"We'll teach you how to play." Percy added.
"Thank you- that is very good of you two!" Edward beamed. "So what do I do?"
"Well, basically, the rules are that you get some trucks, and line them up then..."
Percy lost interest in what James was telling their brother. He was bored, so he went up to a truck, and then biffed it. It moved eight "squares"
The little green engine whooped, causing the other two to look at their brother.
"Hey you started without us!" James protested. "That's cheating, not to mention unfair!"
"I was bored!" Percy defended.
"Well you could wait! I was telling Edward what to do, and you went and ruined the game!" James argued.
"I have not!"
"Have too!"
"Have not!"
"Have too!"
"Have not!"
"Have too!"
Edward sighed as the two engines descended into a noisy and irritating squabble. This was a nuisance, at any rate. He'd better stop the fight, or else his siblings will be in trouble with their parents, Gordon and Molly.
Look, there's no need to argue. He said calmly. "How about you explain the rest of the rules to me, Percy, and James can set the game up for us?"
The others thought this was a sensible idea, so James bustled about sorting out the trucks, whilst Percy explained the rest of the rules to Edward.
By the time James finished, Edward was reasonably informed of the game, and was set some trucks to use.
The game went very well, with no cheating from anyone, and best of all, Edward, by luck and a bit of clever strategy, won his first game of Truck-Scotch!
