Maka POV

I didn't know if things could get any worse for us. Medusa's sly smile mocked me as I stood panting a little ways away. Blackstar and Kid were both doing the same around me. Blackstar had a black eye and was covered in scrapes and bruises. Kid was bleeding. A large gash across his left forearm was the result of a vector arrow slicing through the air, luckily Kid had blocked it before it hit his throat.

"Maka, this fight is only going to get harder the longer it is!" Soul yelled, his reflection breathing hard as well in the blade of my scythe. I grit my teeth. I would have to do witch hunter to get rid of this woman. I gripped the handle tighter.

I ran towards Medusa fast, jumped into the air and prepared to stike.

"No way are you getting away from me that easily!" Blackstar yelled suddenly. He appeared next to me, bad timing. I stopped my attack and landed hard on one knee, Blackstar swiping furiously with Tsubaki. Medusa grinned and stared straight at me. An arrow shot towards me faster than I could blink.

"Maka, duck!" Soul yelled but it was too late. A hand cane from no where and shoved my shoulder hard. I flew forward, sliding along the ground until I stopped against a tree. Dazed I looked back in time to see the arrow slice deep into Kids shoulder...

"Kid!" I screamed. The arrow retracted, blood was everywhere. Kid staggered forward a step and then fell onto his knees. One hand gripped his shoulder, blood seeping between his fingers as he fell onto the ground. Liz and Patty transformed and leaned over him panicking.

"Poor little Grim Reaper." Medusa cooed and brought her attention back to me. I grit my teeth and raised my scythe. I began Soul Resonance and my entire body shook with rage and hatred. Soul and I built up enough energy into Witch Hunter.

"Die you witch!" I yelled and jumped into the air. Her blocks failed and she darted away from my attack. My blade just scratched her arm before she vanished into the thin night air. I landed, panting hard and enraged that she had gotten away. But a cry from Patty made my blood run cold. Kid...

"How is he?" I asked as I ran up to them. Blackstar, Tsubaki, Liz, and Patty were crouched next to Kids motionless form. Soul transformed next to me and put an arm around my shoulder.

"He's losing to much blood." Tsubaki said through tears. I rolled Kid over, his eyes closed and his wound still bleeding. I put my hands over the large cut in his shoulder. His pulse was weak and irregular, too fast and fluttering.

"Call Lord Death, he needs to go to the hospital immediately!" I said quickly. Blackstar and Tsubaki quickly ran off to do it. Kids face looked pale, his hands felt cold. Liz and Patty were crying next to me, their hands stained red. I couldnt let Kid die here, not after he had just saved my life...

...

An hour later, Kid was in surgery. Professor Stein said that any longer and Kid wouldn't make it. He was barely breathing by the time we finally got to the infirmary. I sat in the waiting room quietly looking at the ground. I was in shock from what had just happened. My hands and clothes still were covered in blood. Kid had lost so much, it was amazing he was still alive. I only hoped that we weren't too late.

"Maka, come wash up. I'll take you home and we can return in the morning. Stein will be in there another few hours." Soul said, reaching a hand to me. I slowly looked up at him. I'm sure I looked like a train wreck with my red, puffy eyes, dark circles, and scratches.

"He won't be done till morning?" I asked, glancing at my watch. It was already 2 in the morning. Soul shook his head and helped me stand.

"Theres no use in worrying yourself to death. Kid will pull through, he always does." Soul tried to reassure me. But I could only look down at my blood stained hands.

"Soul, you saw all that blood. He shouldn't be alive." I said hoarsely, close to tears again.

"But he is. He's alive because of your quick thinking." Soul smiled and led be towards the door. "Come on, I'm starving, let's get a bite to eat real quick."

We walked back to our apartment. My feet felt like giant concrete blocks. I finally slumped into my bed while Soul devoured a burrito next to me. He held out one to me but I should my head. I wasnt hungry. Soul downed the rest of his food and sighed contentedly. He sat down on the foot of my bed as I lay there.

"Maka, it wasn't your fault." Soul said quietly. I lay and listened. "Kid was protecting his friend, like any one of us would have done for each other."

"But I should have taken her out then and there. If I had, Kid would be..." I trailed off as tears began to well up in my eyes again. "Kid would be ok."

"Who knows? Maybe. But it didnt go down like that. You cant change the past." Soul sighed and I looked over at him. "But I know you did you best. You couldn't have done anything differently." He squeezed my arm lightly.

"Blackstar jumped in front of me, he was trying to attack her at the same time." I said as details began to come back to me. "I had to stop so he wouldn't hit me as well."

"Blackstar likes the spotlight, let him have this moment. Maybe realizing his mistake almost cost Kid his life will teach him something about fighting." Soul said and stood up. I nodded and leaned my head back into my pillow.

"Soul?" I asked before he left the room. I heard him hesitate. "I'll take a burrito now." I looked over at him. He grinned, his pointed teeth bright in the moonlight filled room. He tossed me one.

"Goodnight." He said and closed the door. I quickly ate and leaned against the bedrest, looking out the window. Right now, Kid was fighting for his life on a surgery table. I could only imagine how Dr Stein felt. He was such a ruthless man when it came to science, but I could feel somewhere deep down that he did care for his students, even for the son of Death himself...
