Clary likes to tease Jace about his sleep cycle. "What are you, an old man?" she asks, smiling. Jace likes to pretend she is wrong. But he still wakes up earlier than her for a run every morning, and falls asleep before nine o'clock most nights.
She's a bit of a night owl, though. She'll stay up late, sketching and drawing. By the time Jace is going to bed, she's just gotten out watercolors. Sometimes, Jace wakes up to find she's fallen asleep on the couch, sketchbook fallen from her hands and onto the floor. He collected her pencils for her, places them on the table, throws a blanket over her and kisses her forehead before leaving for his run.
One morning, when he woke up, she was already in the second-bedroom-turned-art-studio, and though the door was closed, he could hear her shuffling around. He wondered if she'd pulled an all-nighter. When he got back, she was standing in the middle of the living room, the walls now covered in her artwork. He helped her hang the rest up, higher on the wall where she couldn't reach.
Izzy always wakes up before Simon. And even though they go to bed at the same time, Simon knows she lays awake much longer than he does. When she's stressed, she sets her alarm for even earlier. It is definitely not healthy. So one night, Simon turns it off.
And the next morning, she wakes up two hours late. And she tries to be mad at him. She really does. But it's hard to be mad at Simon. Especially when he's baked way too many cinnamon rolls and made inexplicably perfect hot cocoa. And built a pillow fort in the library, filled with blankets and those sappy romance novels she'll never admit to liking.
Magnus can never fall asleep at a consistent time. Some days when Alec gets back from a particularly long day at the Institute, he's already in bed. Other days, Magnus doesn't even walk into their bedroom until early morning. Alec, half-awake, will curl around him, murmuring in his sleep.
On the days Magnus leaves early, he leaves a kiss on Alec's cheek and a note next to the coffeemaker. And on the days Magnus sleeps in, Alec leaves a mocha on the counter and post-it note on the bathroom mirror. When they wake up at the same time, it's to morning-breath kisses and what's likely to be a failed attempt at pancakes.
